Job Description
Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. was established in 1973 as a diversified ocean engineering and naval architecture company providing service primarily in Hawaii and the Pacific. In Makai’s early years, we took a technical lead in a number of innovative projects that helped develop a unique set of skills and expertise. Deep water pipeline design for energy applications, marine vehicles and deep water cable installation software development were some of those projects.
Today Makai’s services have greatly expanded, and we are more global in nature. Our clients are found throughout the world. Makai has developed a broad spectrum of engineering expertise and provides services in research and development, design, construction engineering support, construction management, testing, and systems analysis, cable lay planning, analysis and support and other diverse operations in the marine field. Makai takes pride in providing innovative award winning design solutions to complex ocean engineering challenges. Our personnel have extensive engineering, software development and technical backgrounds and are experienced in working on new and unique projects and in the preparation of comprehensive design documentation, specifications, cost estimates, engineering reports and presentations.
In the last two years Makai has formed a partnership with Lockheed Martin Corporation on the development of the first commercial sized OTEC plant. This is a huge, demanding and exciting sustainable energy project that could have a major near term impact on energy production in remote islands such as Hawaii and other islands in the Pacific, Caribbean and Indian Oceans. We are actively seeking talented engineers to join our team in this endeavor as listed below.
Senior Mechanical Engineer:
Makai’s design group is looking for a talented and fast-learning senior mechanical engineer to take a design supervision role in this group. Major project responsibilities within this group include design of floating Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant and design of Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC) systems in selected locations around the world. Within the group, OTEC Design responsibilities include design of heat exchangers and a heat exchanger test facility, large diameter pipe handling system design, plant configuration design and overall system analysis. SWAC design responsibilities include overall project development, pipeline and environmental loading design analysis, detailed mechanical design tasks and construction management duties.
Specific responsibilities for the senior mechanical engineer position will focus on leading the design, development and testing of major components in Makai’s OTEC project design responsibilities. The senior mechanical engineer will lead several mechanical and ocean engineers in this work and will be responsible to:
• obtain an overall understanding of project goals and obligations,
• appreciate the importance and role of his specific task within the project,
• understand the capabilities of engineers working under him,
• break down the design task into manageable subtasks and assign subtasks to subordinate engineers,
• accept a lead technical design role in the work while continuing to supervise, coach, manage and assist subordinate engineers,
• ensure project deliverables and deadlines are met,
• verify that design documentation requirements are fulfilled,
• communicate and coordinate with the client and Makai’s partners and subcontractors on all matters related to the work.
• and maintain a positive outlook and perform as a strong technical team member.
Ability to think and write clearly and be suited to demanding engineering analysis are important assets for this position. A strong working knowledge of MS Office Software and other common analytical engineering software such as Matlab is required, and expertise in Autocad or Solidworks is a desirable skill. An ideal candidate would have an MS or BS in Mechanical Engineering with significant past experience in one or more of the following fields, heat transfer processes/heat exchanger design/testing, mechanical design and prototype development/testing, structural design, process plant design or other relevant experience. All of Makai’s work is in the ocean and is marine related. Therefore, ocean experience, background or interest will be a definite plus for this position. Candidates should be U.S. citizens or possess a green card. Makai provides competitive salary, benefits and a unique work atmosphere.
