Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer
Company: New York Power Authority
Location: Astoria, NY

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is the nation’s largest state-owned power organization and one of New York State’s leading electricity suppliers. NYPA generates low-cost power at facilities throughout the state, with 80 percent of its energy coming from clean, renewable hydropower. It also maintains and operates more than 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines across New York.

Presently, The Astoria Power Project is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join the electrical team at our Astoria, NY office.

Job Description
The individual will be responsible for providing electrical engineering design to support the Authority's fossil generating assets and associated transmission facilities. The candidate will demonstrate competencies in the design and integration of all classes of electric utility systems and apparatuses. A robust knowledge of a wide range of power system equipment and controls is required. Proven success in managing the technical and administrative aspects of fast-paced and emergent projects is critical. Typical duties will include ownership of the conceptual, analytical, and final design stages of modification projects, review of all design documentation, and the ability to administer on-site construction support, as required. These tasks will often be accomplished through a lead coordinator function in which the candidate will assume a largely autonomous role, possessing the ability to perform independently without need of significant managerial or associate guidance. In addition, the individual will act as the Project's design organization representative, serving as a project liaison between various Authority departments, electric utilities and consultant organizations. Foundations of the candidate's character will be those of self-reliance, firm professional integrity and the rigorous ethical motivations commonly associated with the engineering profession. This position requires up to 25% travel.

Required Skills
Candidate must have an understanding of power system theory and a general knowledge of hydroelectric and fossil power generating facilities, including both substation and transmission equipment, protective relaying, instruments and control systems. Working knowledge of industry codes and standards such as NEC, NFPA, NYS and NYC building codes, ANSI and IEEE standards is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong oral, written and inter-personal communication skills, ability to exercise independent judgment and contribute effectively as both a team leader and individual contributor on multi-discipline projects.

Required Experience
To qualify, you must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering combined with substantial years of applicable experience. A New York State professional engineering license is required for the senior level position.
