Position Summary

The Performance Optimization Manager will lead engineers providing analytical support for Calpine�s 23 GW fleet of natural gas power facilities, covering all aspects of thermal performance. Responsibilities include the management and development of performance analytical tools that will be used to support plant business decisions for monitoring the heat rate and capability of generating assets, trending and improving plant performance, fleet economic dispatch and plant betterment.

� Develop and maintain thermal performance monitoring tools for ongoing assessment of the natural gas fleet thermal performance.
� Work closely with plant managers, turbine maintenance staff, commercial managers, and energy traders to understand plant operating characteristics to help optimize the profitability of the generating assets.
� Identify and analyze performance issues and convey the implications for plant profitability.
� Identify plant performance improvement opportunities and provide analysis for management decision-making.
� Generate reports of expected benefits including capacity, heat rate, availability, or production cost improvements.
� Remain up-to-date on emerging power plant performance technologies and optimization tools and techniques.
� Position reports to Vice President, Operation Analytics

Skills and Relevant Experience
� Experience in managing engineers
� Experience with and working knowledge of gas-fired combined cycle and major equipment performance and operation particularly GE and Siemens gas turbines
� Knowledge of statistics
� Proficiency with thermal performance modeling tools such as Gatecycle as well as the Microsoft Office suite of computer programs.
� Familiarity with performance measurement mechanics (such as OSI Pi and other database platforms) is preferred
� Attractive backgrounds include work in plant engineering, development, engineering for OEMs, and work as an Independent Engineer

Qualifications

� Develop and maintain protocols and procedures, including generation of performance correction curves for thermal performance testing.
� Provide plant and equipment performance assessments including identification of improvement opportunities.
� Provide equipment overhaul evaluations in support of corporate maintenance activities.
� Position works closely with plant managers, turbine maintenance staff, commercial managers, and energy traders to understand plant operating characteristics to help optimize the profitability of the generating assets.
� Position reports to Manager, Performance Testing

Skills and Relevant Experience
� Experience in conducting performance tests on gas turbine based power plants, particularly those with GE and Siemens as prime movers
� Understanding of ASME Performance Test Codes (esp 19, 22, 46) and performance corrections and calculations
� Proficiency with thermal performance modeling tools such as Gatecycle as well as the Microsoft Office suite of computer programs.
� Familiarity with performance measurement mechanics (such as OSI Pi and other database platforms) is preferred
� Attractive backgrounds include work in plant engineering, development, commissioning, engineering for OEMs, and work as an Independent Engineer

Qualifications
� Minimum qualifications include bachelor�s degree in engineering, preferably mechanical engineering with up to 5 years of plant and/or testing experience

� Assist in conducting training and supervision of company employees as necessary to assure proper implementation and compliance with of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Compliance program.
�Monitor 3rd party �R� Stamp quality control program in accordance with approved ASME/NBIC QC Manual and current Certificates of Authorization.
�Participate in inspections and or audits for the development of an Approved R-Stamp Contractors List, including thorough review of proposed contractor�s qualifications (i.e.; Certificates of Authorization, QC Manual, WPS�s, WPQR�s, NDE and PWHT procedures, Licensing, etc.).
�When directed, provide technical support to all company departments, groups, regions and operating plant personnel as needed to ensure continued fleet reliability and availability.
�Assist in conducting condition assessments of power boilers and high energy piping systems.

Qualifications:

� Fifteen (15) years experience related to design, construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair / alteration of ASME power boilers, pressure vessels and piping systems.Ten (10) years must include quality assurance and or quality control management, five (5) years of which must include management and or implementation of NBIC ?R? Stamp repair / alteration program.
� Must have basic understanding of State Jurisdictional boiler and pressure vessel rules and regulations, and have:
� Working knowledge and experience with ASME, NBIC, ASTM, ASNT, API, PFI, MSS, AISC, and AWS Codes and Standars.
� Experience in all aspects of power plant construction, fabrication, maintenance and repairs / alterations, with specific experience related to natural gas fired combined cycle power plants.
� Extensive working knowledge and experience with SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, and SAW welding processes, including qualification of welding procedure and welder performance qualification testing.
� Working knowledge and experience in non-destructive examinations (ie; RT, UT, MT and PT) of welds and base materials in accordance with approved company procedures and ASME/NBIC QC Manual.
� Good communications skills and ability to convey technical knowledge and criteria to a vast range of professionals and organizations.
� Good typing and computer skills, including use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other windows based software applications as needed.

� Ability to read and interpret piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID). You must have experience in providing technical support for large electric � power generation systems operations, maintenance, and/or construction.
� Understanding of power plant operations, including the interrelationship of engineering with operation and maintenance functions and familiarity with ASME Performance Test Codes, IEEE and NERC.
� Expected to review plant electrical related operational and equipment problems that result in poor performance, reduced availability, loss of efficiency, or loss of capacity.

� Responsible for submittal of documents in accordance with applicable California Energy Commission Conditions of Certification.
� Inspects construction site for compliance with applicable LORS.
� Manage site hazardous materials and waste.

� Assist site contractors to ensure their compliance with applicable LORS.

Qualifications:

� Experience associated with power plant operations preferred. Must have good general knowledge of environmental health and safety rules and regulations associated with power generation facilities or large construction projects. Good oral and written communication skills required. Must be comfortable speaking in front of people.
� A Bachelor?s degree in an environmental science field, health and safety training, or equivalent working experience.
� Must know how to lead as well as work in a team environment.
� Must be able to use the Microsoft Office Suite.
� Valid driver?s license with an acceptable driving record

Tasks performed include implementation planning, contract management, risk identification/ mitigation/management, performance measurement, financial audits, variance analysis, financial projections, and requirements control on multiple construction projects to meet contractual/project requirements and optimize cost savings and efficiencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

� Responsible for review of the Projects Monthly status reports, including Procurements, Engineering, Construction and Startup of the various Projects under construction.
� Responsible for periodic evaluations of Engineers, Contractors and Calpine equipment suppliers for compliance with Calpine�s Program Management Plan.
� Works closely with the Calpine Project Teams, to review and comment on the status of Engineering and Construction Schedules.
� Report and graphic�s of actual field progress as it relates to the monthly updates.
Helps correct technical problems with schedules, reporting and posting of current, forecast and planned progress
� Supports the Project Teams with the integration of Engineering, Construction, Procurement and Startup schedules into a Project Master Schedule.
� Breaks down complex Project Schedule into Milestone/Summary schedules and reports that can be reviewed by management.
� Work closely with the administrative staff utilizing SQL for document and drawing controls.
� Administer the SQL databases for reliability and consistency.
� Develop charts and graphs to support the Construction Management Team with presentations to Upper Management and the various Groups and offices within Calpine.
� Performs other duties as assigned.
� Support the development and implementation of cost engineering guidelines, procedures, business processes systems and tools that enable the accurate and efficient evaluation of project performance and optimize the delivery of projects from inception through completion.
� Assist in developing requirements for budget foundation, cost recording, reporting, and analyzing standards, programs, and reports for Capital Construction Projects.
� Support the implementation of trend and change management programs and procedures applying to cost analysis and projections.
� Establish project cost control setup, develop project forecasting, budget monitoring and project cost control functions.
� Ensure proper cost coding and bookings as well as review and development of accounting accruals.
� Analyze and manage proposals, budgets, invoices, and change orders.
� Develop and maintain status reports including: cost financial analysis and forecast cash flows contingency/trends plus project risk assessments impacting schedule and cost for recommendations to the Project Team.
� Perform performance monitoring and control functions for construction contracts to ensure that contractual and cost objectives are met.
� Analyze claims relative to potential effects and impacts within cost and schedule requirements.
� Ensure proactive problem identification and analysis.
� Provide input and analysis of Weekly and Monthly Progress reports on cost related issues.
� Support Corporate Capital Planning and Forecasting with required information including trend and forecasted cost analysis.

Qualifications:

� Applicant must have strong computer skills, especially with spreadsheet, database and word processing software.Also must be well-versed in the use of scheduling systems.A working knowledge of Material Management systems is desirable.
� Possess good management and leadership qualities.
� The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
� Good problem solving and analytical ability.
� Good organizational skills and attention to details.
� Applicant should have a good understanding of heavy industrial construction techniques, engineering design fundamentals..A working understanding of scheduling techniques & cost accounting is also required.
� A Bachelor of Science degree in ME, EE, CE or Construction Management is preferred.Demonstrated understanding of MySQL and basic programming techniques is a plus.
� A minimum of ten years of directly related experience is required.

The Cost Estimator will be responsible for developing capital cost estimates, costing analysis, subcontract bid reviews and budget development support functions. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, utilizing project cost estimating systems, preparing detailed capital cost estimates, developing and maintaining up-to-date cost information databases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

� Perform project capital cost estimating and related cost estimating tasks as required.
� Apply and utilize project cost estimating software systems in support of capturing and summarizing project capital costs. Responsibilities include:
� Applying and utilizing the software system(s),
� Populating the software systems with capital cost data both conceptual and detailed as may be necessary.
� Importing and exporting of other relevant cost data.
� Perform project capital cost budgets in support of the Projects.
� Assist the Project in projected capital cost control management, including the timely notification of identified variances and trends.
Identify and assist in the development of processes or procedures to most effectively support the management of projected capital costs.
� Coordinate with Engineers, Managers and Project Field Staff as required in conceptual estimating and in the executing of the project budgets and review of subcontractor bid packages.
� Perform drawing take-offs in support of projects and in development of estimates.

Qualifications:

� A recognized degree in a business or, technical discipline from an accredited college or university, or commensurate work experience performing related duties.
� Five years work experience in support of capital projects.
� Demonstrated strong project and process organizational skills.Demonstrated ability to manage cost estimating tasks for multiple and diverse projects against firm deadlines.
� Strong computer skills including expertise in MS Excel spreadsheet and related database management, competency in MS Word, and competency in MS PowerPoint.
� Ability to handle multiple acquisition and diverse tasks simultaneously in a self-directed manner.
� English literacy, strong verbal communication skills, written skills and mathematical computational skills are required.

Qualifications:

Ten years experience in power industries.

Willingness to travel frequently.
