This is a long term position for a rapid-growth startup.

--Job Description--
Append Media is looking for a local, reliable, and experienced Node.js, HTML/CSS/JavaScript programmer to join our startup team on a contract-to-hire basis. This is an in-house (not remote) contract position, and is an opportunity to anyone who wants to join a local, successful startup venture in Milwaukie, OR (right next to Portland). You must be able to commute weekdays to our office.

This position is not for the feint of heart or for those looking for another generic cubicle job. We are a small team bootstrapped for success.

As a Jr. R&D developer, your role will entail building server-side functionality in node.js, including web APIs, file and directory manipulation, using Linux, and communicating with databases as well as occasionally updating apps. This may often entail encoding and translating complicated business logic to code, and ensuring optimum scalability and stability.

Internships are provided a for up to one month, and up to two months to work on a primary project important to the company and to learn and demonstrate skills.

You work may also require light graphics editing, working with fonts, forms, multiple browsers, using browser “dev” consoles, ensuring responsive design, and generally making projects accessible for users and other developers.

--Required Skills--

  • Solid understanding of HTML, CSS & SASS.
  • Good understanding and practiced in vanilla JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of OOP and Prototypal programming patterns.
  • Understanding of asynchronous code (async/await, Promises), callbacks, variable scope, and other JavaScript concepts.
  • Basic understanding of MVC and MVVM.
  • Strong knowledge of web technology concepts (request, response, server, client, etc..).
  • Familiarity with, or the ability to learn, KendoUI (www.telerik.com/kendo-ui) and other JS libraries.
  • Experience using Visual Studio Code.
  • Experience using source control systems like Git.
  • Understanding of image and other file formats (e.g. PSD vs JPG vs PNG), compression (e.g. lossless vs lossy), minimization, etc.
  • Ability to provide scope estimates, meet with clients, and able to work with minimal to no supervision.
  • Able to visualize problems and conceptualize logical process flows - that is, visualize logical processes in your mind.


The following are not required, but are nice to have:

  • Knowledge of JavaScript tooling & frameworks (JQuery, express, NPM, etc.).
  • Multi-language discipline in other languages is always great.
  • Experience using Google apps (Drive, Gmail, Hangouts, etc.).
  • Decent knowledge of SQL (Postgres and MS SQL Server) with a desire to learn more.
  • Ability to work on a Linux workstation and with Linux-based servers (we are a mixed-OS shop).


  • Provable skills with the many or all of the above requirements.
  • A genuine passion/interest in technology & development.
  • A demonstrable talent in computer programming and technology concepts.

--Salary & Benefits--
During the contract portion of this career we pay at a negotiable hourly rate on 1099.
