The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The person hired for the position of Manufacturing Engineer will support operations serving the Materials Resource Division (MRD) at the Decatur, AL plant. The person hired for this position will apply extensive knowledge and experience to develop and refine critical manufacturing processes for optimal safety, quality, and efficiency. This position requires an individual with strong leadership skills, who is a good decision maker with the ability to collect facts and facilitate good business decisions. The person will apply broad knowledge and experience to enable improvements in operations to solve complex and diverse problems to deliver results in quality, customer service, cost reductions and new product development.

Being responsible for performing and guiding technical activities resulting from approved self-initiated or assigned manufacturing programs leading to innovative applications and extensions of existing or new products/ technologies.
Apply knowledge of statistical techniques for monitoring and improving manufacturing processes. Improve upon these skills through regular participation in appropriate activities.
Lead local and global Management of Change projects focused on communication, risk evaluation and execution of process and product changes.
Support local and global manufacturing teams on rapid resolution of customer issues; including timely response, communication and implementation of corrective actions.
Initiate, identify, recommend, and oversee programs in the manufacturing area of responsibility to improve: 1) product cost, service, and quality, and/or (2) process safety and health/environmental impact.
Use Lean, Six Sigma and Value stream tools to drive improvements in assigned areas.
Identify, evaluate, and implement manufacturing technology advancements, including new processes, equipment, and materials.
Perform capability assessments and cost estimates for new business opportunities.
Identify and implement a comprehensive education plan to continually advance technical skills and personal development as well as promotes and actively participates in programs to enhance organizational effectiveness. Functions as a technical resource and mentor within immediate work group.
Foster and cultivate an extensive network of support and resources (laboratory, quality, financial, manufacturing, engineering, sales, and marketing) to facilitate completion of assignments.
Actively participate in developing project assignments and completes assignments without detailed instructions. May guide the technical activities of other employees.
Willingness to be on-call
Represent 3M Decatur during internal and external customer interactions and audits
Other duties as assigned
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:
Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited institution
Two (2) years experience in a private, public, government or military environment in one or more of the following areas: project engineering, process engineering, manufacturing engineering, manufacturing technology, product development, quality, EHS, and/or research laboratory.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university
Three (3) years experience in process engineering within a manufacturing and/or industrial setting with demonstrated strength in engineering/technical skills
Training and experience in Lean methodology, statistics, SPC, DOE, and Six Sigma are beneficial. Green Belt/Black Belt certification is a plus.
Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams, especially across multiple sites or divisions.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with strong communication skills both verbal and written, analytical and organizational skills to manage different priorities
Ability to prioritize, multi-task and remain flexible to changes; responds with a sense of urgency
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
