THE JOB:
The Powertrain Systems Electrical Engineer will engage one of the most exciting technology areas within GILLIG's product line. You will collaborate with various partners to interpret customer requirements, discover and develop new ideas and capabilities with external vendors and other engineering teams to deliver innovative diesel, hybrid, natural gas and battery electric powertrains. You will interact with engineers for many other systems involved in the rapidly growing field of clean power technologies as a part of a staff of other individual contributors. You will work to ensure powertrains meet customer and regulatory requirements for current and future products. This position reports to the Engineering Supervisor of the Powertrain Team and is located at our manufacturing plant in Livermore, CA.

The Technical Focus:
As new fleet orders enter Design Engineering you will have the opportunity to experience the unique engineering challenges of powertrain applications in the heavy-duty transit coach industry. You will partner with peers to try new ideas, learn how to power our vehicles with a widening variety of clean-tech systems. You will integrate with designs for several systems across all aspects of our vehicles and contribute directly in several ways:

  • Proactively engage Program Managers, Vehicle Sales, Vehicle Integration and various component vendors to determine powertrain electrical and control requirements for systems such as: engines, transmissions, electric powertrains, low voltage controllers and power electronics.
  • Evaluate, understand and collaborate on ideas to create new designs and modifications to existing designs for new bus fleets, as well as product quality improvements and cost reductions on existing products
  • Work with major supplier requirements, vehicle and subsystem requirements in a team environment to trade-off powertrain functions and capabilities with other vehicle systems to optimize the vehicle and help others learn as traditional and electric powertrains evolve
  • ideas to create new designs and modifications to existing designs for new bus fleets, as well as product quality improvements and cost reductions on existing products
  • Work with major supplier requirements, vehicle and subsystem requirements in a team environment to trade-off powertrain functions and capabilities with other vehicle systems to optimize the vehicle and help others learn as traditional and electric powertrains evolve
  • Create high quality, reliable and maintainable designs by adapting existing powertrains, evolving new powertrains and generating your own new designs
  • Work with GILLIG managers, internal experts and key suppliers to select electrical and electronic components such as transducers, actuators and peripheral control devices
  • Introduce and support new designs into production
  • Provide support for manufacturing issues and customer field issues
  • Acquire knowledge on transit industry products and help bring improvements to our products in areas such as:
1) Electric machine design or testing for electric vehicles or industrial equipment
2) Integration of base engines and transmissions
3) Embedded control hardware and software
4) High Voltage batteries and power electronics

YOU:
  • Do you have a bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Electronic, Mechanical, Agricultural or Industrial Engineering?
  • Have you worked on a vehicle or industrial product design or test engineering team?
  • Have you worked on powertrains in the automotive, heavy truck, transit, earthmoving, aircraft, or stationary equipment industries?
  • Do you have knowledge of electrical engineering standards for vehicles or industrial machinery such as IEEE, SAE or ISO?
  • Do you have hands-on experience with powertrain electrical/electronic hardware or software?
  • Have you used electrical CAD packages such as, AutoCAD, Zuken E3 or Siemens Mentor?
  • Are you proficient with MS Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)?
  • Perhaps you have some other experience that would be plus:
  • Hands-on problem solving with hourly assemblers and technicians in a test lab or manufacturing plant
  • Prototype testing or field testing
  • PLM/PDM system exposure (Teamcenter, Windchill, ADEPT)
  • High Voltage battery engineering, testing or applications
