This Research Engineer will work to connect utility infrastructure to the world, make data usable and insightful and tackle performance-based challenges as more devices plug in to the internet of things. You will contribute to Itron’s Distributed Intelligence team helping create the foundation for a more resourceful world.
The Research Engineer will be responsible for design, implementation, and operation of the Itron Distributed Intelligence Research Lab systems and components. These systems are used for creation and development of distributed intelligence algorithms and applications implemented on the Itron Gen5 Riva AMI network, which comprises multi-million node distributed computing systems deployed at electric utilities around the world.
Duties & Responsibilities
Collaborate with global team of engineers, scientists and mathematicians who are inventing, designing, evaluating, and testing distributed intelligence applications in the electric utility space
Circuit design and implementation of electric grid simulation use cases
Contribute to software design and development
Support firmware configuration
Component troubleshooting and maintenance
Analyze power systems voltage and power flow
Assists in design, analysis, and testing distributed algorithms
Work in, and maintain, a secure lab environment
Experience: Entry level, no industry work experience required.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, required.
Strong technical and theoretical understanding of electrical and power system concepts
Professional workplace communication skills
Ability to problem solve and ask questions
Strong mathematics skills
Foundational proficiency in MATLAB
Soldering and electrical systems maintenance skills
Ability to work on location in Raleigh, NC in a lab environment. This is NOT a remote role.
Preferred Skills & Experience
Master’s degree in electrical engineering
Advanced MATLAB proficiency
