- Test-driven development
The Elevator Pitch: Why would I enjoy this new opportunity?
Ready to build? So are we. Come join VMware’s Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU) team. We're made up of products and services under the Tanzu portfolio. Tanzu brings Dev and Ops together to build, run, and manage apps your users love on any cloud you choose.
About Our Team: Carvel
Our team focuses on building and maintaining an open-source suite of tools known as Carvel. Carvel consists of reliable, single-purpose, composable tools. These tools aid in application building, configuration, and deployment to Kubernetes.
About the Role
The Senior Member of Technical Staff role provides a unique opportunity to impact the Kubernetes tooling landscape. You will be able to solve technical challenges that deepen your understanding of Kubernetes. Through agile software development methodologies and test-driven development (TDD), you will deliver high-quality code. Working in a collaborative environment, you will drive features from design through delivery. This is a hands-on role focused on collaboration, execution, and delivery. There will be plenty of opportunities for growth.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6 months you will work toward completing?
Within the first 30 days, hit the ground running. Get to know your team. Develop a high-level understanding of Carvel’s technical domain, scope, and responsibilities. Begin operating as a part of your team.
Within the first 90 days, continue to deepen your relationships with the team, the tools, and the domain. Develop a lower-level understanding of at least one of the Carvel tools. Contribute to technical and product discussions within the team. Begin operating as a team.
Within the first 6 months, know the team and the tools. Understand our users and their needs. Lead feature development with minimum supervision. Become an approver/owner of at least one of the Carvel tools. Understand the team and our needs. Lead experiment to improve team processes. Provide stability to the team.
What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing regularly?
Hands-on execution work within a TDD culture. Write golang in a clear, sustainable manner.
Design solutions for complex problems while closely collaborating with teammates. Oftentimes we'll pair to achieve the best results.
Work in public (such as Slack, GitHub) due to the nature of our open-source tools.
Maintain and grow the Carvel open-source community by responding to questions, triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, and there will be opportunities for presenting talks/demos.
Proactively identify areas of improvement within the product, codebase, or team practices. Propose and drive experiments.
