Director of Advanced Battery Research in Cell Technology Group

This position executes the development and design of anode electrodes to be used in XALT Energy’s next generation Li-ion cell products. The individual will possess a good working knowledge of Li-ion batteries, the chemical and physical properties of cell materials, in particular graphite and silicon-based anodes, and an aptitude for solving problems. The candidate will also possess competencies in experimental methods related to cell electrochemistry and interpretation of results using design of experiments. Candidate will be capable of working cross functionally with Cell Engineering, Manufacturing, Pack Engineering, Cell Validation, and Application Engineering functions of XALT Energy, as well as with professionals of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies and affiliates.
Develop graphite and silicon-based anode electrode and cell materials and designs meeting program objectives and timing for future cell products. Identify risks to meeting objectives and design projects accordingly.
Identify, source, and develop graphite and silicon-based anode raw materials from commercial suppliers, engaging in joint development activities as needed. Develop and document specifications for raw materials. Develop and execute necessary characterization and testing at bench and pilot scale.
Investigate and overcome design, performance, and processing limitations and risks to next generation graphite and silicon-based anode electrodes and technology using experimental and computational approaches. Recommend and support necessary and economical changes to processes and equipment at pilot and production scale to accommodate new anode materials.
Identify, source, and develop enabling materials and technologies specific to silicon-based anodes.
Design experiments and project plans, monitor and assure timely progress, analyze data, and prepare and deliver data updates and reports.
Train and mentor technicians in the fabrication of graphite and silicon-based anode electrodes in coin cell scale, pilot scale, and production scale. Facilitate transfer of new materials, designs, and processes to pilot and manufacturing.
Apply DOE and other statistical tools and techniques to measure, analyze, improve, and control assigned project processes. Drive Best practices in FMEA and critical parameter development.
Keep abreast of research and issues through networking, conferences, and literature review, and report on and evaluate emerging technology trends to strengthen XALT Energy’s competitive position.
Benchmark XALT Energy cell materials and design against competitor offerings.
Act as subject matter expert for IP strategy development and execution. Review published literature and patents.
B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrochemistry, chemistry, analytical science, material science, polymer science, or engineering, with 6+, 4+, or 2+ years experience in R&D lab environment, respectively.
Working knowledge of Li-ion batteries, the chemical and physical properties of cell materials.
Fundamental knowledge or background with graphite and silicon-based anode electrodes, including electrode and cell design, mixing, coating, cell assembly, and performance. Knowledge or background with how other cell components interface with graphite and silicon-based anode electrodes, key enabling technologies and design strategies.
Strong electrochemical background and methods related to Li-ion batteries are highly preferred, including CV, EIS, charge/discharge cycling.
Hands-on experience with lab analytical tools preferred (SEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, NMR, XPS, etc.), including interpretation of data and development of procedures.
Experience with documenting procedures and using sharepoint.
Experience of keeping data book and using, maintaining, building, and continuously improving databases.
Experience with leading and working in teams, within groups and cross-functional between departments.
Excellent verbal and written communication.
Capability of training and supervising technicians and operational workers.
Excellent project management skills, comfortable with and organized in leading multiple parallel projects. Willingness to work under pressure and in time-constrained situations.
