This senior engineering role is focused on developing our new standard products as well as custom bespoke equipment to support power generation, mining, oil & gas, shipbuilding and factory automation applications.
The Climax global engineering team is located in Newberg, Oregon, just 30 minutes southwest of downtown Portland. The team engages in cross-functional product development with a focus on solving our customers’ applications. To facilitate both structure and creativity, we use a well-tuned stage-gate product development process that organizes around cross-functional teams.
The scale of our machines can vary from suitcase-size to that of cargo shipping container. They are typically comprised of over several hundred components that are manufactured, purchased and configured to support our customer applications. The engineering team is challenged with finding the proper combination of custom designed as well as “off the shelf” components to configure a machine that will meet customer requirements. Due to the unique niche markets we serve, we often have to develop our own gearboxes, feed mechanisms and clamping structures to meet requirements and cost targets. Climax is proud to manufacture over 40% of its components in Newberg and the remainder in the USA. Quickly and effectively model concepts and detailed designs using CAD software; (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
Define, design and estimate new product cost using existing and new components for a specific customer application
Convert customer inputs into a conceptual design that can be shared and understood by the cross functional teams and the customer
Capture key customer value-driven features and translate those features into a product specification with a focus on meeting the market drive price/profit targets
Use engineering risk analysis tools on complex problems to ensure quality functional designs that meet agreed upon requirements
Offer creative and innovative suggestions for solutions to problems while supporting new standard product definition requirements.
Work proactively with manufacturing to ensure customer expectations are exceeded through Stage gate product development processes, resulting in a robust manufacturable design.
Dig into root cause of problems or cost reduction opportunities for quality solutions.
Provide direction to machine designer/drafter team.
Provide engineering-based project management-cross functional leadership.
Work with the customer (voice of customer) to understand complete application/needs
Effectively consider implications of machine configuration on system/operator safety
Support final product testing/demonstrations with hands on approach and specification focus
Work with Program Management to ensure deliverables are met for a proper launch
Define Verification and Validation steps that align with product specification
Present solutions to Marketing, Sales and customers
Understand and abide by sound DFM principles
Work with project management on complex, multimillion dollar machining solutions projects
Identify and define patent/IP protection opportunities
Mentor, teach and coach design and systems engineers
Handle stress in a professional manner, demonstrate the ability to get along with others, demonstrate successful attendance and punctuality and work overtime / extra hours as required to meet business needs
Travel to gather critical information to meet customer and business needs is required (passport needed); less than 15% travel, primarily domestic; international travel required on occasion

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s in engineering; 10-15 years of related design experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proven ability to manage large projects to success.
Experience in developing product costing worksheets using known costs, similar too costs as well as projecting costs using supplier inputs as well as industry experience.
Experience generating prints per ASME Y14.5-2009 standards with effective use of GD&T
Experience with conceptual layout and design to support customer quotes & product development activities
Excellent skills in CAD, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Project. Familiar with computer planning systems such as MRP including Bills of Materials.
