POSITION SUMMARY:
The Robotic Application Engineer is a valuable role responsible for providing support in welding-related technical questions. Tasks include reviewing customer and standard requirements as well as managing and improving welding data to optimize productivity. Responsible for developing Robotic welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications and engineering principles. Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Investigates problems, analyzes root causes and derives resolutions. Will use Problem Solving Process to ensure sustainable quality products.
Evaluates and develops programming/coding of the robotic systems and software.
Develop new standards and processes in welding and fabrication for robotics.
Design fixtures/work holding devices to support existing and new products for welding
Performs software updates, seam development and assisting operators in setting up equipment as needed.
Proactive involvement in the application of new technologies to improve the welding process
Provide technical support for robotic program on assembly processes
Developing welding techniques and procedures for robotic welding operations
Implement process improvements for current robotic welding practices
Ensure accurate documentation of all robotic weld parameters and weld audit reports, and develop and maintain a welding reference library (Database)
Create back-ups of robot programs or parameters and Maintain operational archive of Robotic systems Data.
Assist or perform welding equipment setup and communication
Assist or perform robotic weld gun calibration
Perform verification of weld equipment performance
Perform assembly tasks
Complies with company’s safety and environmental measures.
Read and understand blueprints and other assembly drawings.
Communicates effectively, ability to work independently or in a group
Works with other shop staff and their applied processes as it impacts the work being completed

JOB SCOPE: Operates within general parameters, but must use sound judgment and independent decision making when carrying out job responsibilities. Has the ability to influence and recommend modifying existing protocols. Will monitor all aspects of robot performance in production runs. Develops, implements, and improves complex manufacturing production processes and methods. Utilize skills to improve output and reliability of the robotic systems. Develop training materials to improve skills of technical team. Failure to meet the expectations of the customer or requirements of regulatory bodies could result in increased costs as well as significant loss of future business.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: Must be able to discuss complex thoughts and timelines with engineers and planners.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels and outside customers.
Computer skills required, including engineering computer equipment and software (analysis, design, CAD/CAM and data programs). Knowledge of MS Windows, Advanced Excel, Word, Auto-CAD, and SolidWorks modeling.
Experience with automatic offline programming software for robots.
Experience developing weld parameters, process sheets, training modules and analysis of weld
Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and their applications.
Demonstrated previous experience with Robotic Arc welding and associated simulation tools.
Must be well-organized, detail and customer (internal and external) oriented, a self-starter.
Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, work orders, blueprints, contracts and technical publications.
Ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively and respond well to last minute, high priority, time sensitive projects.
Ability to schedule, direct and organize work within a diverse department and coordinate work with other departments to maintain efficiency and facilitate group decision-making, team building and conflict resolution.
Must have the ability to take on a variety of responsibilities in a small team environment.
Hands on experience assembling, testing and troubleshooting robotic systems in shop environment and field
Must be comfortable discussing plans and design details before design is complete.
Must be able to discuss concepts before all facts are available.
Must be able to travel/drive between facilities to support production on site.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
Minimum Two (2) years of experience in design and development of complex, multi-axis mechatronic or robotic systems.
Minimum Two (2) years of experience in robot path programming

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced office setting with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity in the yard. The individual may be required to be in production areas in yard. He/she must be able to walk to and from job sites. The person must be able to climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders. The incumbent may be required to lift up to 20 pounds. He/she may be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekend work. There may be local travel and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 15% of the time with notice.
