What are we looking for?
As a member of the Material Characterization team, in this role you will conduct studies to determine the composition and characteristics of chemical products and polymers to:
Support new product and applications research and development by contributing to the structure-property correlation understanding, by proposing characterization techniques and experiments, and by developing new characterization protocols.
Provide support through problem-solving with customers and manufacturing by making recommendations in terms of material characterization, and performing appropriate testing
This position requires a high level of understanding of structural characterization, specifically in Polymer Physic and Rheology. Knowledge of polymer synthesis isn’t mandatory but would be a plus.
A major focus for this role would be the development and expansion of the polymer physics program within the Company.
The role will require a high level of collaboration, but in order to be successful the candidate will need to be self-motivated and autonomous, with the ability to manage both long and short term projects.
Activities involve support for existing customers and addition of new businesses/applications. The successful candidate should inspire to be innovative, and would lead OMNOVA into new, advanced, emerging analytical techniques to build competitive advantage and potentially new core competencies in Material Characterization.
Your primary responsibilities...
Define, perform, optimize Polymer Physics testing in order to provide reliable and appropriate results; interpret results in order to support:
Progress for technical projects
Knowledge building in correlation to structure/performance of OMNOVA’s existing and under development products
New product commercialization providing supporting data to applications teams
Compliance and Regulatory
Working closely with different partners such as chemists, process and production engineers, and other Material Characterization team members, propose Material Characterization techniques for consideration, and identify new methods to develop
Train and coach others within the department in application and utilization of instrumentation as needed
Manage multiple projects or tasks
Prepare and analyze samples and standards
Uphold all ISO and OMNOVA calibration practices and schedules
Maintain laboratory equipment; perform repairs and troubleshoot when necessary
Write technical reports and identify specifications for processes, products or tests
What we need from you...
Candidate must be of the mindset that Safety is always the number one priority
MS or PhD degree required in polymer sciences or engineering, or related field
5+ years’ experience in polymer characterization using several techniques, including DMA, TMA, RPA, and rheology, to solve scientific problems and/or advance scientific knowledge. Experience should include development of new analytical methods
Possesses experience successfully implementing new process or programs
Strong problem solving skills, including perseverance when facing obstacles or challenges. Must be able to follow through on long term projects and drive progression when necessary
Capable of managing multiple projects with the agility to succeed in an environment where priorities are frequently shifting
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain comprehensive records and laboratory notebooks and logbooks
Thorough understanding of statistics and their application in Analytical method validation
Ability to travel 10%
Ability to move equipment weighing up to 30 lbs
Qualifications that can set you apart...
Strong background of polymer synthesis or manufacturing, especially in the area of styrene-butadiene, acrylic, and urethane chemistries, among others
Familiarity with emulsion polymerization
Working knowledge and/or experience using other analytical techniques, including Microscopy, AFM, TEM, chromatography, NMR, or others
Helps others improve technology, processes or products. Willing to teach others and improve OMNOVA’s global understanding and application of Polymer Physics
Uses the appropriate quality and continuous improvement processes (e.g., Six Sigma tools) to improve the technical contribution of the group.
