GIS AnalystKBR (kbr.com) is seeking to fill multiple, full-time GIS Analyst positions to support the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/), located near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org). The successful candidate(s) will become an integral part of the Science Division Team of the Technical Services Support Contract (TSSC) at the USGS EROS Center. The Science Division Team is comprised of highly talented scientists, technical specialists, and software engineers that work together to support the dynamic science and technical requirements of our USGS Customer. This is covered by a wide-ranging portfolio of projects, including focuses in fire science, drought monitoring, ecosystem dynamics, hydrology, land cover monitoring, hazards monitoring and forecasting, and others. As a GIS Analyst, working within this portfolio, one utilizes numerous Geographic Information System (GIS) software, scripting techniques, statistics, data mining, and/or modeling methodology to produce, manipulate, analyze, and interpret geospatial datasets that contribute to the science focus area. Education: Bachelor’s degree in an area related to earth sciences, remote sensing, GIS, data science, or similar field Experience: 2-3 years of directly related professional experience is preferred (willing to consider differing combinations of education/experience) Responsibilities: Applies an earth science background in project research and development activities Performs GIS/remote sensing data collection, management, processing, and analysis using various software packages Incorporates scripting/automation efficiencies into data processing work flows and ensure data quality at all stages Utilizes statistical software, such as R and Excel, to validate, compare, and study data results Develops high-quality maps, charts, graphs, tables, and other figures that illustrate geospatial data Develops metadata for geospatial datasets May include up to 2-weeks travel to attend scientific conferences or other project-related meetings / field trips Requirements: Fundamental understanding of remote sensing science and the characteristics of geospatial data Experience working with various GIS software applications (ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, ERDAS) Understanding of computer modeling techniques (decision tree and random forest) Knowledge of statistical-based data analysis and validation techniques Proficient in geospatial data analysis and interpretation Experience working with scripting languages, such as Python, R, GDAL, to automate workflows Familiarity with Google Earth Engine and cloud-based/high performance computing environments Strong writing and verbal communication skills Demonstrated initiative, dependability, and interpersonal skills The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain credentials for facility access and user accounts.
