Electrical Engineer 3
Flux Location: Washington, Vancouver
Flux is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer 3 to join our project team onsite with our client in Vancouver, WA. This position will provide engineering services for Corrosion Work projects and as well as provide general electrical engineering services in support of the transmission line maintenance functions, including field measurements, monitoring, assessments and escorting. This position will provide engineering electrical expertise for Research and Development Projects, including high voltage switchgear, transmission line grounding, induced voltages, lightning protection, electric fields, avian collision and exclusion mitigation, corrosion field measurement, monitoring, mitigation, field supervision and personnel instruction, and underground cable location.
Position Responsibilities include:
Conduct field site inspections, operations and maintenance assessments, emergency repairs, as well as provide consultation and recommendations into unique, complex, and critical engineering efforts in area(s) of expertise.
Perform corrosion measurements on anchor rods and transmission line towers, footings and valve groups, converter stations, microwave communications and weather monitoring towers, switch racks, and other structures as requested.
Provide status reports on corrosion mitigation recommendations and methods.
Conduct field reviews and make recommendations as to the optimum choice of switchgear for installation on the transmission system.
Review project requirements diagrams (PRD’s) and make recommendation to troubleshoot issues with existing switchgear.
Provide training to other personnel in the maintenance, repair and replacement of high voltage switchgear and components.
Provide training to other personnel in the proper maintenance procedures for a wide variety of cables in use within the system
Gather detailed Field Data on each field switch, including corrosion quantities.
Conduct field inspections and coordinate replacements of cathodic protection on structures such as field switch structures, PCS towers, microwave and weather monitoring towers, including anode and grounding cell installations and replacements. Update engineering records as appropriate.
Provide corrosion expertise, conduct field inspections of substation structures and footings and recommend mitigation methods.
Collaborate with project team(s) to develop / draft and recommend material / equipment specifications, SOWs, BOMs, Material Requests (MRs), and other procurement process documentation; assist with developing cost estimates and project budgets;
Provide subject matter expertise to standing or ad-hoc committees and teams, including serving as technical advisor to the “Grounding Committee”; providing input and recommendations into safety procedures for testing switches; and addressing other issues and concerns in area(s) of expertise.
Provide recommendations for mitigation of bird collisions with facilities.
Document / draft and propose instruction materials in the use and interpretation of data from the Corrosion Test Set; provide training as requested.
Perform Corrosion Tests at structures that have Cell Phone Systems (PCS) installed.
Draft specification documents for PCS Sites located on structures.
Check present design, materials and practices for anchor rod corrosion protection (e.g. plate material, wrapping of anchor rods with special tape, use of magnesium or zinc anodes, guy insulators, etc.); make improvement or mitigation recommendations for approval; assist with implementation of management approved recommendations, which may include participation in the acquisition (developing specifications, clarifying requirements with internal and external stakeholders, etc.), testing, construction / maintenance, inspection and other processes.
Perform corrosion measurements at selected sites where the lines share a corridor with natural gas pipeline(s) to determine whether or not there is any interference from the pipeline(s).
Identify critical (lines where failure may jeopardize system integrity) 115 kV and 230 kV wood pole lines and recommend mitigating procedures.
Check grounding cell installations and/or cathodic protection systems at various substations. Identify the need for and ultimately perform routine maintenance on KOH solution in grounding cells.
Verify proper operation and protection at all substations with active rectifiers in place.
May also perform cable locating services, and provide training of personnel to do the same; provide design review, and corrosion protection consultation and training.
Periodically check and monitor cathodic protection on identified cables. Download data and analyze for impending problems and/or damage.
Draft test procedures for checking the calibration of gauges and alarm trip points on oil-filled high voltage cables.
Calibrate all pressure gauges and reset all alarms to correct values as established by appropriate industry standards or staff.
Draft and recommend emergency response procedure(s) as needed for restoration of damaged submersible and underground cables.
Develop periodic (monthly, quarterly, yearly, etc.) inspection lists for each cable.
Check Cable Oil Degasifications System and Pressurizer for proper operation and make recommendations for repairs as necessary
Inventory Spare Parts and recommend replacement of materials / equipment that have deteriorated to the point where they are no longer usable. Recommend disposal of items that have been superseded by newer and/or better designs for management approval; assist with disposal arrangements with the Investment Recovery Center (IRC).
Verify new equipment installations and materials do not jeopardize existing cables.
Provide design, maintenance, and operation recommendations for high voltage sub-marine cable and monitoring systems.
Serve as a resource to other group engineers and junior engineers, providing insight, expertise, training, first-hand, intimate knowledge of several aspects (corrosion mitigation, high-voltage switch gears, cable locating, cathodic protection, line grounding, etc.) of keeping ’s Transmission system running safely and reliably.
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other closely related engineering field is required.
10 years of practical electrical engineering experience is required.
10 years of experience with high voltage engineering.
5 years of experience with the following:
Corrosion mitigation (cathodic protection preferable)
High voltage transmission cabling/sub-marine cabling, including inspection and testing and corrosion mitigation
Knowledge and experience of high voltage and extra high voltage switchgears.
Knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) standards and practices.
