What You Will Do
Serve as a process/system engineer on the PT-1 Pyrochemical or PT-4 Foundry Engineering Team in a high-value manufacturing and production-focused environment. As a process/system engineer, major responsibilities will include helping to design new processes, improving established processes, and troubleshooting a wide variety of unique systems (i.e. molten salt electrochemical cells, vacuum induction casting furnaces, gas transfer systems, environmental chambers, etc) used in the production of actinide components.
The PT-1 Pyrochemical Engineering Team is responsible for supporting high temperature molten-salt operations involved in the recovery, separation and purification of actinide metals and compounds. Additional projects involved may include: novel processing equipment design, process improvement and testing, and small scale R&D experiments, all of which require collaborations across numerous organizations.
The PT-4 Foundry Engineering Team is responsible for supporting material blending, alloy casting, shape casting, heat treatment, and final annealing of actinide metal products. Additional projects may include casting mold design, process modeling (FEA, CFD, Induction field coupling), surrogate cold lab castings, component replacement design/testing, and chemical isotopic/metallographic data analysis.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Pyrochemical or Foundry Operations Teams, by ensuring operability of their process, maintaining a technical processing baseline for their process, and working with colleagues to identify and develop process improvements. The successful candidate would grow to provide real-time, technical support and guidance to processing floor-level operations while ensuring compliance with the Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, Quality, and Safety Management Programs established at LANL.
Successful candidates will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards. Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts.
Leads peer review of the work of others within his/her own organization and participates in peer review across organizations or disciplines.
Applies and interprets, on a broad basis, specialized, state-of-the-art engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
Models a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment and that supports cooperation, teamwork, and resource sharing.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: chemical, computational, electrical, mechanical, nuclear or other R&D engineering field.
Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects.
Leadership and Management
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure.
Enhances technical and professional expertise of junior staff through active mentoring and training.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing Laboratory policies affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.
Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers. Develops intellectual property and contributes to professional societies, publications, copyrights, external collaborations, and/or patents. May contribute to technology transfer.
Contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals. Acquires internal/external funding for self.
Attains additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognitions to grow in field.
Education and Experience
Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
Experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.
Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations principles.
Demonstrated experience working in a nuclear facility.
Existing DOE “Q” clearance (or equivalent).
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Where You Will Work
The Metal Production Group (PT-1) is responsible for producing high purity plutonium metal in support of the United States’ modern stockpile. Manufacturing processes are conducted at the nation’s plutonium center of excellence, TA-55, PF-4. PT-1 has the responsibility of operating and maintaining the plutonium facility laboratories, gloveboxes and equipment in PF-4 and development activities at satellite facilities. PT Division’s pit manufacturing operations include plutonium casting, machining, gas operations, welding and assembly.
This R&D Engineer position for PT-1 offers a broad range of challenges including equipment development, process development, and challenging pyrochemical processing of plutonium activities in support of national security.
