Overview of role:
WestJet has been and will be significantly expanding its global network and the size of its business. As WestJet becomes more complex and challenging, we are seeking a technology leader to join our Digital & Innovation office. This individual can exhibit a high standard of excellence, enjoys challenges, and is results-driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to work in an agile environment.
As the Team Lead of WestJet’s Digital Check In delivery team, this position works closely with business, IT and vendor stakeholders to ensure the effective and timely delivery of extensible, high-quality software systems that meet business needs. They lead cross-functional teams of up to ten persons through the object- oriented design and development phases of large, complex software development projects. They are the top-level technical experts that participate in Level 4 support of WestJet’s mission-critical application portfolio. This position can be based in Vancouver BC, Calgary AB or Toronto ON.
Key deliverables include:
Lead, develop and inspire highly skilled team of up to 10 people, including determining day to day tasks, alignment to strategy, hiring, career development and performance reviews with a focus on enhancing employee engagement.
Provides top level technical leadership, direction and oversight to Developers, Testers, and consultants working on development project.
Establishes and actively promotes the use of development best practices, methodologies and standards through the development organization.
Leads the planning of Development activities, resource allocation and provide estimates of effort required to satisfy business needs.
Collaborate with multiple business stakeholders to understand requirements and impacts of Capital project requests to the current product delivery schedule.
Work with the business stakeholders to build product roadmap and oversee overall delivery that aligns with that roadmap.
Collaborate with Enterprise and Solution Architecture and other IT teams to implement technologies and services to align with direction and improve overall efficiencies of the development team. ie: Test Automation, Deployment Automation.
Designs and writes robust, extensible, high-quality code that meets business, technical and quality requirements.
Works with technical staff to understand problems with software and develops specifications to resolve them. Assists in training less experienced programming staff.
Participates as a top level technical expert in design development, coding, testing, and debugging new software or significant enhancements to existing software.
Experience and qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, business or equivalent.
Minimum 10-15 years of in-depth experience in product development supported by relevant years of experience.
Proven ability to effectively lead Development Teams in object-oriented design, development and automated unit testing best practices.
Proven ability to plan and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment in which priorities and direction may shift frequently.
Expert knowledge of software development best practices in an enterprise environment.
Proven ability to build strong business relationships with product owner(s) and business stakeholders.
Strong customer focus coupled with excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills.
