The Department of Family Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 3 to support its expanding research efforts in community-based primary care practices. This position will work in a collegial and collaborative environment with academic teams, community-based organizations, primary care practices, government agencies, and the WWAMI region Practice and Research Network (WPRN) and its Coordinating Center.
Established in 2007, the WPRN is a collaborative group of over 70 primary care practices in the five-state WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) region whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of patients in their communities through the conduct of research that informs and enhances primary care clinical practice. The WPRN includes community health centers, private practices, and university-affiliated and government-operated clinics. The WPRN’s diversity of geography and practice type allows it to reach many rural and underserved populations.
The key roles of this position will be research conduct, quality improvement, and project management related to projects focused in areas such as opioid management, behavioral health integration, cancer control, practice improvement, collection and sharing of data in primary care practice, and development and coordination of a network of clinical organizations collaborating on implementation research.
This individual must have excellent communication and project management skills. Additionally, this individual must have a proven ability to work independently, agilely, and in collaboration with and under the supervision of a variety of researchers and project staff on assigned projects. The Research Scientist’s direct supervisor will be Dr. Laura-Mae Baldwin, Professor, Department of Family Medicine.
The Research Scientist’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Collaborating with teams to design projects collaboratively or independently, as expertise allows;
Contributing to research design;
Developing IRB applications;
Conducting pilot projects;
Collecting primary data and assembling secondary data for analysis;
Assembling, cleaning and managing quantitative and qualitative analytic datasets using conventions established by the Research Section;
Identifying appropriate methods and, depending on skill set, conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses of research data;
Developing presentations and preparing parts or all (depending on the composition of the research team) of reports and manuscripts;
Presenting research and project findings to internal and external audiences;
Conducting literature reviews and synthesis of information for projects, manuscripts and grants;
Seeking to identify and develop new funding sources;
Serving as a Practice Facilitator for primary care organizations implementing new interventions (e.g., opioid management improvements using the Six Building Blocks Program);
Developing tools and identifying relevant resources to support primary care organizations’ improvement work;
Responding to funder requests, including developing monthly and annual progress reports;
Facilitating research between academic teams and clinical sites;
Serving as a liaison between the WPRN, other organizations in the WWAMI region (e.g., Federally Qualified Health Centers, Fred Hutch, Kaiser Permanente) and research teams both locally and nationally;
Managing project operations, from development to implementation and evaluation;
Contributing substantially to determining project goals and objectives;
Monitoring progress toward accomplishing project and related departmental goals;
Identifying problems and technical issues that affect project goals and timelines and identifying appropriate solutions;
Taking initiative to move projects forward;
Preparing project reports/briefs and publications;
Providing ideas to improve project efficiency;
Contributing to positive co-worker/research team/ investigator relationships through efficient and helpful interaction on current grants/projects.
The requirements for this position include:
Master’s degree in public health or related field;
At least 3 years of experience developing, organizing, and conducting health-related research and/or practice coaching;
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently;
Excellent English writing skills;
Experience working in primary care or health services research;
Excellent time management skills;
Proficiency in standard office software programs (e.g., Word, Powerpoint, Excel);
Interpersonal and communication skills needed to work with a multidisciplinary team of faculty investigators, research scientists, research staff, and community-based organizations;
Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods;
Proficiency in use of quantitative and/or qualitative analytic software such as Dedoose, Atlas.ti, NVivo, SAS, SPSS, R, and/or STATA;
Proficiency with graphics and spreadsheet software;
Demonstrated experience with both technical scientific writing and preparing concise summaries of research findings for lay audiences;
Experience operationalizing clinical trials
Familiarity with clinical areas such as opioid medication management, cancer control, behavioral health.
