Responsible for the planning, execution and supervision of the duties normally associated with vessel handling operations, ensuring efficient, safe and productive operations for the American Queen Steamboat Company fleet (American Queen, American Empress, American Duchess, American Countess). This position is also responsible for achievement of operational and financial goals and objectives. The Vice President of Marine Operations reports to the President and/or the President & CEO, as applicable, as well as has approximately 10 direct reports.
Duties & Responsibilities
Serve as division liaison with regard to regulatory issues.
Responsible for development of division compliance programs.
Function as Company Designated Person for the Safety Management System.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of the Company’s emergency response plan, including exercises and drills.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of the division’s maritime training program. This shall include the tracking of licenses and ratings and proficiencies.
Develop and maintain professional customer and port relations by identifying and meeting customer needs. This includes filing docking permits for both vessels.
Ensure that employees demonstrate customer service principles.
Ensure that Marine Crew wear proper uniforms.
Ensure that Marine Crew possesses proper safety equipment and that it is used correctly.
Assist the Corporate Safety office in implementing the Safety Award Program.
Attend quarterly USCG Inspections. Our goal is no 835’s on either vessel.
Attend each vessel on a monthly basis to ensure that the vessels are properly maintained, manned, operated and in superior physical condition.
Develop short-range business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives.
Develop and operate within approved fiscal budget limits, ensuring targeted P&L results.
Comply with area accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures.
Provide regular training and ongoing feedback to staff.
Secure, evaluate and develop staff who will assure the level of performance and productivity necessary to achieve current and future objectives.
Ensure that site staff works effectively as a team with each other; ensure effective and regular communication and high employee morale.
Ensure Vice-President is kept aware of current operations status through regular communication and by issuing periodic reports. This includes Weekly Activities Summaries, Monthly Progress Reports and attendance at monthly Management Meetings in Memphis.
Develop, communicate and maintain operating and administrative procedures (consistent with division and corporate procedures, objectives and values) designed to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.
Ensure that all policies, procedures and controls are followed and that required reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff, customers and other designated personnel, and that appropriate staff have a full understanding of these procedures.
Support sales and marketing goals by participating in sales activities through new business development and long term customer contracts.
Ensure high levels of productivity and efficiency by assessing operational practices and procedures, and by developing and executing appropriate plans.
Supervise annual layup for both vessels. This includes developing annual layup budgets.
Supervise vessel dry-docking
Assist as needed in new vessel acquisition and refurbishments.
Interview and hire new crew as required.
Work with Human Resources to maintain crew roster and wages
Serve as the primary liaison for the company with the USCG and Army Corps of Engineers
Work with the Executive Management Team and Human Resources Dept to develop and implement an effective Internship Program.
Develop and publish Monthly and Annual Work Rotation Schedule for all Marine Operations Personal.
Work with Port Engineer on Single Point Failure Analysis.

HS Diploma or Equivalent Required
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting Required

At least 10 years of experience in similar role, with at least 5 years of experience in senior management role
