ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
You will be a part of a diverse team of engineers and scientists developing a new class of sensor. In this role, you will apply your strong experimental background to build prototype imaging detectors. The ideal candidate is an excellent experimentalist with attention to detail and meticulous lab skills. The initiative to identify technical problems and the creativity to generate novel resolutions are also required. Responsibilities will include:
- Design and build fixtures to manipulate imaging detectors
- Conduct experiments to bend thin semiconductors to different curvatures
- Adhesive surface preparation, bonding, soldering or joining
- Characterize and test sensors by microscopy and other methods
- Analyze results and summarize key findings in written documents and slides
As a Prototyping Engineer, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials, structures and devices, with current projects spanning from formulating new materials for additive manufacturing to structure optimization for hypersonic vehicles. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative Engineer to grow within our group. With more experience, the candidate can grow into roles with more responsibilities including: writing patents, journal publications and proposals, and eventually managing research projects.
The candidate should have experience with planning, conducting and analyzing experiments. Hands-on laboratory experience (outside of coursework) with processing, characterization and testing of semiconductors, thin films or similar materials is desirable. Experience with semiconductor processing in a cleanroom is a plus. Experience with adhesive bonding, adhesive surface preparation, soldering or joining is desirable. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g. microscopy, polishing) is also a plus. In addition, the candidate should have creative problem solving skills and the ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently.
Knowledge of the basic principles of materials and mechanics is required. Knowledge of basic computer skills (spreadsheets, presentations, word processing, and programming), and statistical analysis is desired. Knowledge of computer aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA) is a plus. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Have visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity and good verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required. Ability to obtain a security clearance is a plus.
