The Air Force Civil Engineer Center focuses on technologies applied to the civil engineer mission encompassing, among others, pavements, materials, soils, matting systems, infrastructure protection, system control, and energy.

The Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) is offering a research mentorship opportunity that will focus on aerodynamic effects. This opportunity will specifically focus on damage mechanisms occurring to mat systems due to aerodynamic effects and other forces determined by dynamic loads. This mentorship opportunity will provide the participant an increased knowledge skill set in the following areas:

Project design

Experimental research

Collection and analysis of data

Critical interpretation of results to provide meaningful conclusions in the field of advanced airfield pavement systems

The participant will also gain knowledge and understanding in developing analysis skills when defining theoretical models with the objective to handle practical scenarios. Additionally, the mentor will coach the participant in the realm of network communication. To build upon the participant’s career development goals, the mentor will guide and provide the participant with the knowledge to empower them with the ability to interact and network with stakeholders and other interested parties.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by AFCEC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

The applicant shall have completed at least the majority of graduate courses in the civil engineer curriculum with emphasis on structural engineering and modeling. Courses on fluid dynamics or other courses of similar content are preferred to assure a rapid start of the analysis. A GPA of at least 3.0 is required for the participant. Applicants shall be attending Auburn University (College of Engineering) and have access to the university resources and facilities.
