The Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is the world's first heavy ion superconducting linear accelerator, and for over three decades it has operated as a national user facility to explore the frontiers of nuclear physics and its applications. The facility provides ion beams of both stable and radioactive nuclei. The stable nuclei are produced by two ECR ion sources and a surface ionization source. The radioactive nuclei are delivered to the accelerator via an EBIS operating in a charge breeding mode.
The Ion Source Group, responsible for the operation and development of these ion sources, is searching for exceptional ion source engineer candidates. This position will support the ATLAS experimental program through the development and delivery of a wide variety of ion beams and have a major role in developing, constructing, and commissioning a new high-intensity ECR ion source.
The candidate will be expected to work within a small group and regularly interact with operations and scientific staff. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential. The ideal candidate will be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision.
Comprehensive understanding of a field of engineering or physics related to high-charge state ECR ion sources and/or electron beam ion sources
Development, preparation, and delivery of a wide variety of ion beams for the ATLAS experimental program
Participation in the development, assembly, and commissioning of a new ECR ion source
High degree of self-motivation, independence, and follow through
Presentation and discussion of results at international conferences and publication in scientific journals
Knowledge in the fields of plasma physics, ion beam transport, RF technology, vacuum technology, high voltage engineering, and electronics are beneficial
Laboratory instrumentation – oscilloscopes and multimeters
2D and/or 3D Computer Aided Drafting and Dimensioning
Charged particle simulation software
Electric and magnetic modeling software
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTORS:
