The Design Engineer (DE) is responsible for designing and developing new products and product improvements utilizing the Thule Project System (TPS). The DE will deliver innovation within the established timeframe, cost/margin target, and Thule quality standard. The DE will collaborate effectively with peers in design development.
Design and development of new product and product improvements from 3D CAD modeling to 2D drawing creation and production implementation.
Utilize and operate within Thule Project System.
Partner with the development team to manage, track and report on project progress and status
Interface with Operations to develop accurate cost and profitability analysis, plan production procedures, select product materials, PFMEA, and define QC parameters.
Work with product managers to utilize and manage both internal and external industrial designers.
Ability to closely estimate product & component cost during development process.
Design and fabricate prototypes utilizing in-house and external resources.
Facilitate procurement of components – prototypes and/or finished goods.
Publish drawing modifications or Engineering Change Orders as required.
Create accurate Bill of Material and product costs – meeting project cost and margin requirements.
Support launch by attending Trade Shows, Customer Calls and Photo Shoots.
Knowledgeable in use of DFMEA, DFM, DFA, DFS, DFP and DFE
RECOMMENDED POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME).
2 - 5 years experience in product design, development and project management.
2 - 5 years experience in Metal Forming, Mechanisms and Plastic Injection Molding.
2 - 5 years in a fast paced, consumer products manufacturing environment.
Fluency and speed in 3-D and 2-D CAD … Certified SolidWorks Professional (80% passing grade)
Experience with using FEA and/or CFD analysis tools to drive design decisions a plus.
Proven track record of driving innovative product design from concept through to mass production, while using a stage gate development process.
Experience and passion for products used in an outdoor, dynamic environment.
10 – 20% domestic and/or international travel.
