Associate Engineer - Mechanical, Chemical or Aerospace
Boyd Corporation
Lancaster, PA
Aavid Thermal a Division Boyd Corporation in Lancaster, Pennsylvania designs and manufactures a broad line of engineered thermal management solutions for a variety of industries which include military, aerospace, medical and telecom. Aavid Thermal’s technologies include high performance heat pipe assemblies, vapor chambers, microchannel and porous metal liquid cold plates, annealed pyrolytic graphite (APG), enclosure heat exchangers, vacuum brazed assemblies, refractory metal alloys, and much more. We have an immediate opening for an entry level Associate Engineer to assist in designing, developing and executing projects.

Our entry level Associate Engineer will be responsible for:
Heat Transfer and Heat Pipe Analysis: Perform analysis related to heat transfer and heat pipe analysis. The associated engineer is expected to gain an intimate understanding of conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer as well as predicting heat pipe performance.

Solid Modeling: Assist with designing products with an approved solid modeling program and creating properly dimensioned drawings to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards (ANSI/ASME Y14.5M-1994). The associate engineer will be trained and expected to advance their skill level to average and/or proficient.

CFD Analysis: Assist with designing thermal products with an approved CFD analysis program such as Flotherm or Icepak. The associate engineer will be trained and expected to continue to advance their skill to average or proficient.

Technical Writing and Reporting: Assist in preparing technical reports, writing and presenting technical papers, writing technical articles for use by other engineering or management personnel. The development of good writing skills is essential.

Presentation Skills: Assist with preparing and presenting technical presentations and briefings. Demonstration of the ability to create professional presentations and present them with confidence is an important skill for advancement.

Sales Support: Supports sales through proposal writing, conducting analysis, and generating solutions to customer’s requirements, preparing datasheets, customer visits and preparing cost/bid support information.

“Hands On” related duties (Up to 50% of time): Most of our engineering project work involves the design, fabrication and testing of complex prototype hardware. As a result, we encourage “Hands-on” engineering activity. An associate engineer will be trained to perform work in the laboratory by assisting other engineers or technicians in the fabrication, test and delivery of prototype hardware. This “Hands-on” experience is a valuable learning step as the engineer’s career progresses. This work involves:

Machining 

Brazing (torch and atmosphere furnaces) 

Welding 

Operation of Furnaces 

Assembly work 

Test setup and testing using developed plans and experimental test programs and fabrication procedures. Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications. 

Minor electrical work

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university with less than 5 year’s work experience.

Language Skills: Has the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Has the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Has the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and employees.

Mathematical Skills: Has the ability to apply mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, derivatives and permutations. Has the ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as calculating heat transfer, predicting heat pipe performance, predicting single and two phase device performance, determination of test results, reliability and validity, analysis of variances, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Reasoning Ability: Has the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Has the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. In addition, the position requires occasional travel on airplanes and automobiles to visit customers to review progress, present findings and plan additional work and support sales.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
