The Supervisor Locomotive Engineer ensures compliance with the best practices (i.e. rules, regulations, instructions and policies) for train handling on their territory. Also, the Supervisor Locomotive Engineer provides subject matter expertise to all levels of management in the region and to locomotive engineers under their supervision, in order to improve train handling techniques and fuel budget.
Critical performance areas include the following but may vary depending on location and circumstances:
Responsible for ensuring that assigned locomotive engineers meet all requirements to maintain a current, valid locomotive engineer certificate.
Provide ongoing training, evaluations, coaching and support to assigned locomotive engineers. This includes ensuring they are trained and possess appropriate skills as new technology develops.
Participate in developing and certifying new initiatives, and subsequent presentation to various levels of management.
Responsible for implementing initiatives in the region to improve safety and control cost.
Ensure proper training for Locomotive Engineer Trainees, which includes the creation of their training schedules. This also includes periodic evaluations during the training process and assessing the skill set of the student engineer prior to issuing a locomotive engineer certificate.
Download and analyze data as directed in the support of company investigations.
Participate in formal investigations.
Required to work varying shifts to cover operations that run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
Respond to unexpected or emergency situations which could include the requirement to operate trains.
Work shifts (day, evening or night) on weekdays, weekends and holidays as required.
Will be on call based on territory requirements.
Significant travel requirements based on territory needs (up to 50% of the time).
High school diploma or GED.
Must be 18 years of age
Valid driver’s license.
Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position
3 years experience as locomotive engineer.
Current/valid Locomotive Engineers Certificate
USOR rules qualified.
Comprehensive knowledge of ABTH rules and techniques, US CFR and best practices of Locomotive Engineering.
Displays intermediate computer skills
5 years experience in railroad industry.
5 years as locomotive engineer.
Prior Supervisory experience.
Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers will go through training of USOR (United States Operating Rules) in Homewood, IL. Training relating to daily operations will be facilitated by current SLEs and Senior SLEs.
The Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers will be assigned a designated territory. The SLE may be required to periodically cover a surrounding territory based on business needs. In addition, the SLE may be required to protect train service within or outside of their set territory.
