Position Title: Prototype Fabrication Specialist and Mechanical Design
Reports To: Mechanical Design Manager
Classification: Non-exempt
Status: Regular/Fulltime
Location: Pontiac, MI

Job Summary:
This is a hand on fabrication, machinist, and mechanical design position with responsibilities for physical prototype development. It is expected that the hands-on prototype work will occupy a 50% to 75% share of the day to day activities with the balance of time spent with CAD. This position works closely with the mechanical and electrical development teams to create models and drawings in SolidWorks from which high quality, high value parts are tooled and manufactured. This position works with the manufacturing, testing, and engineering teams to assist with occasional small scale plant equipment, prototype assembly aids, process instructions, and other artifacts required for early manufacturing and testing of Li ion cell, modules and battery packs. This position is expected to be fluent in the use of SolidWorks, 3D printing, machining practices, knowledgeable with CNC with the ability to manage.

Primary Responsibilities:
Manage and maintain the prototype shop and associated equipment such as 3D printers, machining centers, metal fabrication, etc.
Manage the production of prototype products from start to finish. This requires close coordination with engineers along with the management of raw materials as required for the fabrication and/or machining.
Responsible for maintenance of machine shop and measuring equipment in accordance with XALT’s quality system.
Develop design drawings and specifications for mechanical equipment, piece parts, assemblies, and dies/tools, and controls, using SolidWorks.
Participate and provide input in the early design phase relating to manufacturing and assembly methods.
Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed.

Additional Support Responsibilities:
Assist with material selection; design tools, fixtures, and dies to be compatible with prototype and production intent materials.
Manage machine shop and the implementation of machine shop safe work practices.
Work with other functional areas within XALT (for example Marketing & Sales) to develop product samples for displays and other marketing applications.
Work closely with a select network of local fabrication and prototype shops to enable rapid delivery.
Assess competitive technologies for system level innovation, cost, performance, and functional advantages.
Support Design and Process FMEA, particularly in areas related to component manufacturing and assembly.
Proactively support Design for Assembly and Design for Manufacturability efforts in the design of each part and assembly.

Position Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years of experience in fabrication and/or manufacturing environment. Associates degree required or equivalent skilled trades with additional experience.
Proficiency in safely operating mills, lathes, drill presses, saws, and grinders. TIG & MIG welding skills are desired.
Experience with commercial CAD packages, with at least 3 years of SolidWorks experience.
Experience with 3d printing methodologies.
Experience with various materials including metals (copper, stainless, aluminum) and machinable plastics.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills – position requires strong interaction in multi-functional team environment particularly in high-pressure situations (e.g., launch)
Strong English skills, both spoken and written
Must be a self-starter who takes the initiative to find solutions to technical challenges
Must demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency with creative problem solving methods.
Travel 5-10% of time (mainly between Midland and Pontiac)
