Entry Level RF Engineer – Engineering Rotation Program
Wolfspeed is Cree's Power & Radio Frequency (RF) business and one of the World's leading suppliers of gallium nitride on silicon carbide (GaN-on-SiC) technology and products. Our business is growing rapidly, and we are hiring two entry level RF Engineers to participate in a 12-16 months long engineering rotation program in our Mesa, AZ office. We offer start dates between June and August 2020.
What Wolfspeed can do for you:
You will join a strong, fast growing, and fast paced RF and microwave engineering team with decades of experience in developing and productizing industry leading RF solutions for cellular infrastructure, aerospace and defense, industrial and other RF power applications. For your first 12-16 months on the job you will participate in 3 or 4 four-months long RF engineering rotations that will allow you to grow and strengthen the RF and microwave engineering skills obtained during your recent studies.
Following the completion of the program you will be assigned a permanent role with one of the teams in Mesa, AZ. The decision will be coordinated with you, your manager, and your mentors and will be based on your performance, skill level, business need and personal interest.
Rotation options include and will be assigned based on skill set fit and business needs:
RF power amplifier simulation, measurement and characterization. In this rotation you will work alongside our experienced applications and systems engineering team to fully characterize Wolfspeed’s latest high-efficiency, Doherty power amplifier solutions in state-of-the-art simulation environments and our world-class RF laboratory using the latest methods for characterizing RF devices. You will develop or strengthen your skills with lab equipment such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, loadpull systems as well as utilize digital pre-distortion (DPD) systems.
Design of applications circuits and reference design using the latest Wolfspeed GaN-on-SiC devices. You will work together with our design and applications teams to develop RF circuits with the purpose of highlighting their capabilities to our customers. This work will result in hardware and collateral that will be provide to our customers as a design aide and may be published internally or on datasheets and application notes.
Design and characterization of high-power amplifiers for a variety of aerospace and defense applications such as Multi-Octave Broadband, High Power (>1 kW) RADAR, High Frequency (X and Ku Bands), Multi Stage Discrete Circuit, and MMICs.
High power, high efficiency Doherty PA design for cellular infrastructure application in the 600 MHz to 5 GHz frequency range using our industry leading GaN-on-SiC and/or Si LDMOS processes.
Highly integrated RF power amplifier design for 5G infrastructure application. In this rotation you will be mentored by one of our highly skilled and experienced RF design engineers to design a proto-type of a power amplifier based on the latest market requirements. You will utilize the skills obtained during previous rotations to complete this assignment successfully.
Productization of 5G infrastructure amplifiers. In this rotation you will work with our experienced Product Engineering team to learn how to bring a proto-type into high volume production. You will interface with the design team to coordinate engineering proto-type builds and evaluations. You will utilize design-of-experiments (DOE), statistically analyze data and perform Cpk analysis to derive production worthy processes. You will interface with component vendors and factories to coordinate materials and deliverables and process improvements. You will work with the reliability teams to qualify our products. In addition, you will work with test engineering to ensure accurate data capture and fast throughput.
During the program, you will become proficient in several of the following tasks:
RF circuit simulations and design using AWR and/or ADS
Electromagnetic simulations using HFSS
PCB and mechanical design using AutoCAD
Lab automation using MATLAB
Data analysis, e.g. using MATLAB
S-parameter and loadpull measurements
RF measurement techniques
Interpreting design rules
Taking prototypes to high volume production

You recently graduated with a BSc or MSc degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on RF and microwaves or electromagnetics. What you need for success:
Recent graduate with BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering
Focus on RF and Microwave Engineering or Electromagnetics
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Time management / Prioritization
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Excels in the use of MATLAB
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, result oriented growth business with a start-up mentality
Experience with AWR, ADS and AutoCAD is desired
Hands-on experience with RF circuitry and measurement is a plus
Applicant must be a US citizen, a US permanent resident, or must have the ability to obtain an export control license
