You will be a member of the technology and/or product development team that supports the design and development of innovative, new products within the Respiratory Intervention (RI) business. You will apply advanced technical strategy and concepts to solve complex problems and distill these down to simple, elegant product offerings which strike the appropriate balance of functionality and user engagement. We count on you to strengthen our procedural fluency in your specialty and to push the edges of how we produce beautiful products that inspire both internal and external stakeholders.
Respiratory Intervention’s purpose is to improve the management of patients with acute respiratory failure. We will do this by providing respiratory interventions which improve outcomes and reduce the cost of procedural complications. The newly formed R&D team will focus on creating category redefining products and services for eliminating difficult intubations.

A Day in the Life
Provide mechanical engineering support in the design and development of innovative products for our RI business. Provide mechanical engineering expertise on cross-functional development project teams and collaborate with other Medtronic and external engineering groups.
Grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to technology and product development of airway access devices, endoscopic devices, and adjunct tools.
Develop and implement early phase mechanical concept design, perform tolerance analysis, finite element analysis or other design analysis.
Design components to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion, and related processes. Work with manufacturing to consider high volume assembly processes in design concepts.
Design of fixtures to support data collection and/or laboratory pilot builds.
Help ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.
Provide technical feasibility assessments.
Translate voice of customer (VOC) feedback into engineering design requirements.
Help develop specifications, test methodologies, and test equipment to evaluate design concepts.
Perform calculations, analyses, and engineering testing to verify the designs. Document results in reports and laboratory notebooks.
Create and release engineering drawings.
Process engineering change orders.
Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design requirements & diagnose design problems.
Travel to vendor locations and customers, global and domestic, as needed to help ensure programs meeting deadlines and troubleshoot issues.
Collaborate with other departments within Medtronic on development projects.
Present technical findings or project status to cross functional teams and management through meeting minutes, design reviews, presentations and other means of communication.
Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
Supports the transfer between phases of project life cycle.
Up to 20% domestic and/or international travel.
Must Have: Minimum Qualifications
4+ year with BS in Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering, or Design and Industrial Engineering
2+ year with MS in Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering, or Design and Industrial Engineering
Compensation and job title will be adjusted based on candidate’s education background and experience.
Specialized Knowledge and/or Skills Required:
Experience 3D modeling software, i.e. SolidWorks and/or Creo, preferable SolidWorks
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) practices
Nice to Have
Designing for rapid prototyping methods
Experience in polymer material selection
Experience with optics
Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects
Medical device or healthcare industry experience
Experience creating technical, written content
Demonstrated data analysis skills
Ability to interpret technical drawings and creating Bill of Materials
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
Experience designing and developing electromechanical assemblies
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and methodologies
Effective problem-solving skills
High degree of initiative and self-motivation
Experience solving ambiguous problems
Experience with the design and manufacture of medical devices
Experience in product design and development in an R&D environment
