The role: The geotechnical engineer has full responsibility for developing and finalizing earthwork designs and providing geotechnical recommendations for design of foundations for bridges, traffic structures, and retaining structures. This position prepares reports and reviews reports and products supplied by other unit staff engineers, engineering geologists, and drafters. As the successful candidate in this position, you will provide direction, guidance and training to staff engineers, geologists and drafters.

A day in the life:
Develop and finalize geotechnical design recommendations for complex projects based on interpretation and analysis of soil, rock and groundwater data from surface exposures, subsurface explorations and laboratory testing.
Communicate and document findings, recommendations, and design, write reports, memos, e-mails, and joint geology/geotechnical reports with staff engineering geologists.
Prepare or assist structural engineers in designs and specifications for retaining structures.
Review the work of consultants and work prepared for local agency projects.
Provide geotechnical engineering technical support to maintenance activities and respond to emergency events to assist in assessment and implementation of repairs for landslides, rock fall, settlement/sink holes, structure foundation issues, etc.
Assist region and local agency personnel in project development/scoping.
This position requires frequent travel with overnight stays.
Exposure to hazardous construction sites, heavy construction equipment and drills, at sites where blasting with high explosives is occurring, working in and around heavy traffic, and working in remote locations.
Requires maintaining a valid driver’s license and driving motor vehicles, often long distances, to project sites to perform work.
Field work requires exposure to adverse site and weather conditions in the severe climate of Eastern Oregon.

What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.
Note: "Valid" means you have the ability to stamp. We will verify your license before we consider your application. If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in the state of Oregon within six months of hire.
You will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

Knowledge and experience in the geotechnical engineering specialty field, specifically related to subsurface investigations, slope stability, settlement and earthwork.
Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams and meeting project scope, schedule and budget targets.
Demonstrated experience working independently, but in close coordination with other geo professionals.
Strong organizational skills and experience with geotechnical computer applications (i.e., A-Pile, S-Pile, L-Pile, Driven, Shaft, ReSSA, MSEW and others.
We may give preference to candidates who are registered as a geotechnical engineer.
