Position Title: Senior Technical Specialist - Welding Technology
Reports To: Manufacturing Engineering
Classification: Exempt
Status: Regular/Full-Time
Location: Midland, MI or Auburn Hills, MI
Job Summary:
The Welding Technology Technical Specialist is responsible for defining, testing and implementing welding technologies for Freudenberg Battery Power Systems as well as the support of XALT Energy battery cells. This includes electrode to tab joining, tab to busbar joining, and other various material joinings like metals, plastics, and composites. The welding specialist will apply experience, research, and analysis to implement leading edge joining technologies to ensure robust, repeatable and cost effective joints.
Primary Responsibilities:
Define and implement electrode-to-tab, tab-to-tab, and tab-to-busbar joining technologies that ensure long life, low resistance rise
Advise Battery Pack engineering on joining methods and techniques for all interfaces.
Define test methods and criteria for evaluating joint quality, including destructive and non-destructive techniques
Work with welding equipment suppliers to develop cost-efficient high volume production welding processes with MBP
Work with members of the manufacturing engineering and operations teams to implement new welding processes on existing manufacturing equipment.
Additional Support Responsibilities:
Evaluate existing work processes and initiate practices to promote continuous improvement;
Ensure Battery Pack mechanical design addresses key requirements for volume production like manufacturability, serviceability and recyclability.
Provide lessons learned feedback to the appropriate FBPS as well as XALT Energy teams and customer engineering teams as issues are encountered and resolved.
Ensure automation process design as well product design to manufacturing of welding technologies in high volume production equipment
Assess and benchmark competitive technologies for innovation, performance, and functional advantages towards cost effective process design .
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;
Position Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering; Post graduate studies or degree in Welding Engineering or Automation Engineering highly preferred.
Advanced people skills and demonstrated ability to work with cross functional teams.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in welding technologies.
Experience in Battery Cell Technologies and Battery Systems manufacturing is strongly preferred.
