The BR&T Materials & Manufacturing Technology (MMT) organization is seeking a highly-motivated & energetic Entry Level Materials and Processes Engineer for its Next Generation Metals Development Team located in St. Louis, MO. This team is comprised of world-class metallurgical/material/mechanical/manufacturing engineers, NC programmers, and laboratory technicians dedicated to researching & developing the next generation of metallic material and fabrication solutions.
This position is one of growth with the anticipation of the successful candidate advancing into roles such as principal investigator and/or program manager for key internal R&D projects within the Metal Team portfolio and external in the form of Contract Research & Development (CRAD) working closely with leaders in the field, customers, and Boeing's global network of research partners. There will be interaction with all Boeing business units (Commercial and Defense, Space & Security), functions (Product Development, Phantom Works, Engineering, Production, etc.), Boeing sites across the U.S., BR&T international centers around the globe, strategic universities and research institutions, external suppliers and government entities (Air Force, Navy, NASA, DoE, etc.).
This entry level engineering position will have a dedicated focus on metallic materials development. Professional growth will be linked to support of the BR&T Metals Development Laboratory with close support from senior engineering staff and management. The selected candidate will grow into the role of becoming the primary laboratory engineering resource responsible for managing lab workflow and performing a multitude of material characterization activities including but not limited to mechanical testing, fracture analysis, thermo-mechanical testing, metallographic sample preparation and analysis, heat treatment studies, hardness testing and chemical processing. The selected candidate will also be responsible for compiling test data into accurate laboratory reports for engineering review. The selected candidate will be thoroughly trained and responsible for safely operating state of the art equipment such as a Gleeble, microscopes, vacuum induction melter (VIM), hydraulic press, polishing equipment, mounting presses, air and vacuum furnaces, swagger, rolling mill, and other metal characterization and processing equipment. This position will also carry with it the responsibility of training laboratory technicians in the function and safe operation of laboratory equipment to enhance their skills in the field of material characterization and to support this engineering position in the completion of work statement.
The Next Generation Metals Development Team has core competencies in the following areas of development across the Boeing Enterprise:
Metals Development: Characterization and testing of advanced metallic solutions for applications in next-generation aircraft.
Machining development: process modelling and high performance machining of metallics (soft and hard alloys)
Program support: Design for Manufacturability, process (machining) optimization, prototype part fabrication, and production implementation all with a heavy emphasis on the use of Model Based Engineering tools Additive Manufacturing (AM): Development of material and process specifications for use in next generation aircraft with an emphasis on Directed Energy Deposition (DED) AM technologies. General Manufacturing: Technical support and development on general manufacturing technologies.
Leadership and execution of work statement flowing through the Metals Development Lab.
Data collection, documentation and reporting of material characterization laboratory outputs.
With assistance from senior engineering staff, develop and execute design of experiments.
Interaction with internal and external customers, providing output and insight on current R&D activities.
Ability to master and operate all metal material development equipment.
Training of laboratory technicians in the function and operation of laboratory equipment and enhancing their skills in the field of material characterization.
Collaboration with external partners [government, academia, suppliers, other aerospace companies] on research & development activities.
Lead external capture and execution of Contracted Research & Development [CRAD] efforts in the field of aerospace & defense metallic materials processing.
Basic (Required) Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited course of study in Material Science or Metallurgy.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate across multiple disciplines with internal and external customers.
Computer proficiency and ability to use and navigate the internet and various computer software programs (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
Knowledge and ability to understand and interpret technical data.
Skill and ability to collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources.
Typical Education & Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in Material Science or Metallurgy (e.g. Bachelor) or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Other Relevant Information and Requirements:
The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
