Western Kentucky University, Department of Infrastructure and Operations, seeks applicants for a Network Engineer. This position is technical, serving on the network team, and reporting to the Lead Network Engineer.
Purpose of the Position
The Network Engineer position is essential and a high-level position within the group that researches, designs, configures, implements, documents, and maintains network equipment, systems, and applications. The position provides customer-facing services as well as technical support to auxiliary and core groups within ITS and the University. Their services extend across all facets of the network; Core, Data Center, Edge, Access, and Wireless. The Engineering team will lead the Network Specialists in a technical capacity and collaborate within the Engineering team for advancing network initiatives.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary for this position but not construed as all-inclusive. The addition and deletion of duties assigned areat managements discretion and according to institutional needs.
Operation and maintenance of a large campus network serving diverse needs
Installation and configuration of enterprise-grade network switches and routers
Maintain network documentation and supporting systems including, but not limited to, Network Management Systems (NMS), Security-related systems, and authentication systems
Remote and On-site on-call responses for network outages and network-related issues. "Off-hours" schedule flexibility for planned or emergency work as needed
Installs and configures hardware, OS software, and applications related to Linux and Windows servers and workstations
Provides consultation and collaboration for a wide variety of technology initiatives within ITS as well for others inside and outside of the University
Project management for both network-related projects and other ITS-related initiatives requiring excellent organization and time management skills

Experience with Cisco and/or other top tier manufacturer's network equipment
Experience with network monitoring and documentation in a large-scale environment
Operational understanding of the following: Linux, Windows Server 20xx, VMware ESX, and x86 / x64 server-class hardware
Continual drive to learn new skills and technologies, many times as a self-study endeavor, and the ability to convey that information to others, at any level, in a clear manner
Possess a valid driver's license and maintain it in good standing with University policies
Work experience with the technologies represented by the following terms: Ethernet, IP, VLAN, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, and VOIP.
Work experience with enterprise wireless deployments and related technologies
Salary Grade: 109 Salary Range: $62,000 - $68,000
