Design Engineer – Outdoor

The Design Engineer - Outdoor is responsible for turning product concepts into reality on the Global Outdoor strategies. This role works closely with industrial designers and product managers to ensure that the products within his/her scope are designed so that they meet the book of requirements, deliver against the financial targets, and deliver products or the set target consumers to delight our channel customers. This individual is comfortable leading in a fast paced environment where they may have to perform a wide range of tasks to get the job done. They are a hands-on engineer who possesses a creative, entrepreneurial mindset, and knows how to deliver a best-selling product on time and in budget. This role is perfect for the outdoors lover- someone who is passionate about the outdoor industry, products, and users. Our team firmly believes you can’t make a great product unless you actually use them. The Design Engineer - Outdoor will bring new ideas to life across various product categories and will be just as thrilled as our customers to use them.. This role reports directly to the Senior Product Manager – Outdoor.
Work in collaboration with the product managers, industrial designers and others in an international, cross functional team to deliver products that meet Global Outdoor strategies
Bring an innovative mindset to deliver new designs and concepts that make new products more relevant and useful for our customers.
Deliver all assigned projects to a production-ready state, on time, in budget.
Execute and oversee all aspects of the project from concept to production, working with the global team
Create 3D and 2D drawings using modeling software like Solidworks and Rhinoceros.
Iterate product through design revisions to ensure products meet consumers and market expectations in terms of functionality, performance and quality using a framework like Agile or other method.
Create test requirements and conduct testing to ensure product meets performance and durability targets
Ensure final tooled parts meet design targets, specifications and intended functionality.
Keep relevant documentation updated and Rev controlled in correct lifecycle.
Ability to handle own project management work for projects as assigned.
Travel to factories or regional headquarters around the world depending on travel guidelines.
Liaise closely with product managers and sales in order to maximize the use of insight data and understand how to execute against it.
Lead System and Design FMEA’s and utilize industry best practice tools
Guarantee that all developments meet up to the Dometic standards and values.
Use the products to find opportunities for improvement.
Perform other duties as required.
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required; demonstrated experience may be substituted 5+ years of experience in engineering, product development. Bonus points for start-up experience. Experience with hardgoods, cut and sew, and electronics in the outdoor, automotive, camping, etc. industries required Completely comfortable with 3D CAD modeling software, 2D print creation, defining material specs, creation of test standards Experience working with international factories and cultures Demonstrated ability to successfully lead projects, meet book of requirements, meet deadlines and financial targets. Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities, sound financial acumen Experience with design for manufacturing principles Ability to work cross-functionally (and internationally) as well as be independently motivated and driven with minimal supervision Must have excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint and Excel) Ability to travel domestically and internationally, up to 40%
