Position Brand Description:
BioProcess Research and Development (BRD) organization is responsible for developing and manufacturing large molecule drug substance in support of Lilly’s drug development pipeline. BRD Automation supports the BRD mission by developing automation solutions and providing process control engineering for the control of bioprocess systems from 5L benchtop to 5000L GMP production scale as well as process support systems.
The BRD automation engineer provides technical expertise to implement, support and troubleshoot process control solutions which enable development of large molecule processes and the production of GMP bulk API for clinical trial use. The BRD automation engineer delivers engineering projects, can utilize first principles in the delivery of these solutions and recommends new control strategies for the various unit operations utilized within the organization. The engineer is able to implement solutions utilizing established automation platforms (DeltaV, OSI PI) as well as new/emerging technologies (IoT, wireless, cloud) to achieve results in a cost-effective manner.
This role includes change control implementation, deviation investigation, troubleshooting process control systems and off hours support.
This position is a role within the BRD engineering organization supporting laboratory, pilot plant and GMP manufacturing areas. The position will serve as a process control engineer supporting DeltaV distributed control systems. In addition, this position may also provide support for other process control systems (such as PLCs) and/or process information systems (data historians) on an as needed basis.
Key Objectives / Deliverables
Laboratory/Pilot Plant/GMP Manufacturing Automation Support
Utilize understanding of process automation and process control to find, develop, and implement automation solutions driving productivity gains, safety improvements, quality improvements, and other process improvements.
Leverage knowledge of current data analytics tools (OSI PI, Power BI, etc.) to provide a high level of data mining and analysis to identify and support process improvements.
Design and implement automation related changes to advance department and corporate business goals.
Lead investigation of automation related deviations/process upsets.
Complete documentation and testing activities to ensure that systems are maintained in the appropriate state of validation for use.
Provide engineering solutions to the business
Automation design and delivery of new unit operations.
Provide project management and technical leadership for projects.
Provide appropriate project execution support. Ensure that automation solutions are compliant to minimize regulatory risk to the business.
Oversight of contractors assisting in the delivery of automation solutions.
Utilizes S88 and fundamental engineering principles in the delivery of automation solutions.
Provide recommendations on new control strategies/technologies
Maintain external focus and familiarity with emerging control strategies/technologies
Research and maintain familiarity with unit operations utilized in pharmaceutical manufacturing

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (chemical, electrical and mechanical preferred)
Monday through Friday 8 hour days with flexibility to provide occasional off hours support.
Tasks require entering manufacturing or laboratory areas which require wearing appropriate PPE.

Ability to configure process control systems and troubleshoot computer hardware and instrumentation.

Strong problem identification and resolution skills

Familiar with process control theory.
Experience working in GMP environment with validated computer systems.
Experience in process automation engineering, preferably supporting a manufacturing site.
Demonstrated experience with DeltaV (Batch, Phase/Sequence Programming and Advanced Control Module Configuration), analog and discrete instrumentation, control devices and device networks.
Knowledge of typical bioprocess unit operations: fermentation, cell culture, primary recovery (depth filtration and centrifugation), chromatography operations, and supporting utilities operations.
