MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER ( Mechanical Engineer ) DOD Manufacturing



The Mechanical Design Engineer will conceive, design, develop, and maintain products. Research and recommend suitable technologies. Provide and assist in the coordination and leadership of higher level projects in support of business objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

Machine design experience, includes the design of machine drive systems, pneumatic and hydraulic mechanisms.
Ability to perform analysis using the following tools and/or processes: Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Possess basic understanding of electrical circuits and wiring.

Minimum Qualifications

BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology or equivalent experience. (BS and 7 years of related engineering experience or MS and 5 years of related engineering experience.)
Effective oral, interpersonal and written communication skills, including listening.
Computer skill proficiency to include Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint as well as 3D CAD, such as Autocad, Solidworks or ProE.
Must be adaptable, flexible, organized and act with a sense of urgency.
Must have demonstrated analytical/problem-solving, project management/task planning, engineering risk assessment, creativity/innovation and technical leadership skills.
Must be able to make sound, logical judgments using deductive reasoning, attention to detail; understands the cause and effect of such decisions.


Conceive, plan, develop, and coordinate projects as an individual contributor or as a member of a cross-functional team.
Create and develop engineering project documentation, i.e. bill of materials, drawings, and specifications.
Direct and develop prototypes and test plans; validate as required.
Direct and troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve engineering project issues utilizing state of the art tools and methodologies.
Mentor engineers to learn state of the art tools and methodologies as well as manage and direct co-ops as assigned.
Support and implement product release plans as assigned.
Research and document new technologies to be considered for future product line enhancements.
Participate in or conduct design reviews and provide feedback, using the appropriate tools, i.e. FMEA, field and lab testing.
Research and provide the required product information to support sales, service and marketing to satisfy customer needs.
Support plant engineering and V-A projects as assigned.
Oversee project budget and schedule.
Lead the design of machines as required; meeting established profit margins and on-time production delivery.
Conduct custom mechanical design (modeling) and drawings using 3D CAD software. (Solid Works)
Perform machine startups at customer’s site as assigned.
Provide direction to manufacturing and vendors during the build process of released machines.
Ensure products comply with regulatory requirements (e.g.: BISSC, OSHA, UL, CSA, CE, ATEX, including federal, local and industry safety requirements.
