Mechanical Engineer (R&D) – Mid level

SeaLandAire provides engineering services for data collection applications in difficult environments. We design, develop, and build products tailored to help our customers collect information from any environment, focusing on sensor systems and small unmanned vehicles. As a mid-level Mechanical Engineer, you will work with project managers, engineers from a variety of disciplines, technicians, administrative personnel, and customers to plan, design, build, and test the mechanical aspects of our prototype products and support equipment. The job is fast-paced and usually involves multiple active assignments and projects.

To succeed in this role, you should be comfortable working with the uncertainty that comes with R&D projects, have excellent attention to detail, utilize good time management strategies, possess an aptitude for design and analysis skills, and be able to communicate with and work well within a multidisciplinary team.

Essential Functions

A Mid Level Mechanical Engineer is expected to do the following tasks:

Lead one or more project-specific teams (see supervisory responsibilities below)
Participate and/or lead product development within projects
Establish and/or refine requirements and guide verification methods including at system, subsystem, and component levels
Research, conceptualize, analyze, design, build, and evaluate mechanical aspects of products, equipment, and systems to meet requirements
Generate and/or approve technical documentation (e.g. drawings and build procedures)
Identify and evaluate alternate approaches
Plan, execute, and document testing activities using both established and new procedures, including data collection and analysis
Identify issues, conduct root cause analyses, and recommend design modifications to address performance deficiencies
Contribute to reporting requirements such as progress reports
General engineering improvement within the department
Conduct investigations into new engineering methodologies
Help refine processes to improve quality and reduce development timelines
Support new business capture and project planning
Participate in technical conceptualization process and proposal writing
Estimate material costs, production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions such as proposals

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have department or company supervisory responsibilities, however supervision within projects will be expected. The team size could range anywhere from a few mechanical engineers for a smaller subsystem team up to a full multi-discipline project team at the system level (Project Engineer). Team leads are responsible for planning, organizing, assigning, and overseeing the technical work of other engineers and technicians and communicating regularly with the Project Managers / Project Engineers.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position, with a minimum expectation of 40 hours per week. Hours are somewhat flexible and some late hours may be required.

Travel

Some travel will be expected. Travel is primarily for field testing of products and is often conducted in lakes and oceans from boats.

Other Experience

Experience with or interest in the following areas would be beneficial but not required:

Material selection and fabrication methods for a variety of parts (CNC machining, laser cutting, turning, stamping/bending metal, rapid prototyping such as 3D printing, injection molding, casting, composites, etc.)

CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
Computer programming, particularly Python
Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/A) experience, including understanding transition between R&D and production (quality, build processes, acceptance testing)
Electronics and/or sensor packaging & integration, particularly for marine / harsh environments
Battery-powered devices

Unmanned vehicles
Acoustics
Relevant hobby experience such as Radio Controlled (RC) vehicles, rocketry, amateur radio, marine/watersports, etc.

Since a majority of SeaLandAire's business is funded by the US Department of Defense, applicants must be a "US Person" (US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident).

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

5 to 20 years’ experience in mechanical engineering preferably in an R&D environment
