Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking Entry Level and Junior Structural Engineers to join our team in Portland, ME.

The Wood E&IS Portland, Maine Office is a multi-disciplinary science/engineering/architecture team of 150+ staff, located in one of the most livable cities in the US. Wood offers the technical challenges of projects located throughout the US and globally within the relaxed environment of a small, vibrant city. Projects include building design for restoration, renovations and new construction in commercial, municipal, federal, industrial and defense sectors.

The role of a Structural Engineer is to work within multidisciplinary teams of engineers, and designers on building projects with an emphasis on engineering. As an entry-level or junior structural engineer, you will be working on specific engineering design and analysis tasks under the supervision of a senior structural engineer. The nature and progression of the assignments and the level of responsibilities will depend on your performance and willingness to grow. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are expected. Ability to self-direct and to independently research technical solutions are encouraged.

Key Responsibilities

Entry Level:
Performs simple & routine tasks assigned at the direction of a mid or senior level engineer using the standards set by the company, group, client, etc.
Becomes familiar with the company’s and client’s methods, standards, and practices
Completes field assignments, when appropriate
Has a strong theoretical engineering knowledge
Becomes familiar with engineering software
Exhibits a willingness to assist mid and senior level engineers
Assists team in preparing construction contract documents, plans, and reports
Conducts basic interpretations of drawings, codes, and other standards
Performs other duties of similar nature and level as assigned

Junior Level:
Analyze new and existing structures per required code
Develop calculation packages as required, under the guidance of senior engineers
Perform site visits of existing structures to evaluate their capacity and ability to resist new loading requirements; produce technical reports with technically sound recommendations
Be able to use engineering fundamentals to solve seemingly complex problems
Be able to present and describe engineering solutions and concept competently to both technical and non-technical audience
Develop structural models to solve engineering problems based on sound engineering principles
Skills / Qualifications

Entry Level:
Bachelor or Master in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field
EIT or Eligible to sit for the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam is required.
Willingness to learn structural analysis software such as STAAD, RISA, EnerCalc, etc.
Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite
Familiar with AutoCAD and any other relevant design software
Familiar with Revit and Navisworks, a plus
Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting, engage in creative and critical thought, and effectively communicate concepts and ideas to others
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to effectively meet deadlines
Must be comfortable with the job responsibilities on a construction site
Must have a valid driver’s license
The position may require travel
Must pass a drug test, background check, and must have a satisfactory driving record

Junior Level:
Bachelor or Master in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field, plus (04) four years of experience; Master preferred
EIT or Eligible to sit for the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam is required
Solid understanding of structural fundamentals required
Knowledge of building codes, including seismic and wind requirements
Knowledge with wood, concrete, steel, and masonry
Familiarity with AutoCAD
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
Strong knowledge of structural analysis software such as STAAD or RISA and willingness and ability to learn new analysis software
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to create and interpret sketches, drawings, and various structures
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to effectively meet deadlines
Must be comfortable with the job responsibilities on a construction site
Must have a valid driver’s license
The position may require travel
Must pass a drug test, background check, and must have a satisfactory driving record
The position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.
