Job Summary & Essential Functions:
The following describes in general terms the purpose and scope of the position. The Level I Project Engineer is responsible for the technical support associated with customer products, Planning and New Product Development, Value Engineering, Production Start-Up, Maintenance and Continuous Improvement Programs. This position reports to the Manager of Engineering and functions as the interface between our customers and our internal operations to ensure that all customer requirements are met. The Project Engineer must be able to translate 3D Model Based Definition (MBD) and legacy drawing data into internal documents such as engineering models, production / quality plans and tool designs.

The Project Engineer Level I must be capable of managing complex projects and as part of the Program Management team. A Level I Project Engineer must be a self-starter, capable of coordinating activities while interacting with other (internal and external) resources and have the ability to manage by influence. The Project Engineer must possess excellent communication skills and be able to present to customers, vendors and internal operations, including senior management. A complete understanding of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft structure design and functionality is preferred. Familiarity with the overall Aerospace Industry would be beneficial.

  • Function as the lead interface between customers and internal operations, ensuring that all customer requirements are translated, defined and incorporated into our business and manufacturing systems.
  • Champion of Risk Management, and the ability to utilize Risk Management tools to minimize high consequence Risk.
  • An understanding of Airframe Assemblies, including Cartesian Reference System for Butt Line, Station Line and Water line coordination.
  • Must be able to develop systematic problem-solving techniques.
  • Must maintain awareness of Industry and Market trends.
  • Self-Motivating with the ability to carry our Special Major Assignments with little or no supervision.
  • Must have Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing experience and the ability to decipher complex GD&T tolerance to ensure deliverable product meets all Customer Engineering and Quality Requirements.
  • Will prepare long range forecasts in regard to touch labor requirements.
  • Will champion Value Analysis (VA) Engineering, Producibility/Manufacturability Analysis and Continuous Process Improvement efforts.
  • Identify and coordinate tooling requirements, including forming, functional gauging, assembly fixture and Tool Family Sets. Will participate in the conceptual design of complex tools.
Program Manage the activities associated with new product launches. Specifically:

o Formulate Build Plans and Manufacturing Operations to produce quality components

o Create and maintain accurate Bill of Material (BOM) requirements. o Update planning as required for purchase order/customer engineering changes or for method improvement/correction type changes.

o Provide detailed cost analysis to support Customer RFQ’s and Proposals.

o Interface with customer and supplier engineering to coordinate engineering data and ensure proper flow down of customer Quality and Engineering requirements. o Coordinate all tooling requirements including production rate tooling and projected tool life cycle analysis.

o Prioritize and coordinate project activities for supporting departments and outside suppliers.

o Develop a detailed comprehensive project schedule and establish milestones for each project. Track and report on the status of each project. MS Project Experience preferred.

o Provide status of each project to the customer using an appropriate format and methodology.

o Work with the Engineering Manager in regards to establishing budget base lines, FAI and delivery schedules.

o Assist in writing work instructions (SOP’s) to describe in detail the processing steps necessary to produce component or sub-assemblies.

o Coordinate and assist with First Article Inspection requirements.

o Assist in training other employees in the use of Management Tool, CATIA and MRP System

o Coordinate the necessary information with other engineers to make corrections or improvements to planning, tooling, or processes.

  • Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime as necessary.

  • Excellent communication skills oral and written, able to document and present project status to customers and management.
Preferred Experience/Skill sets:
o 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in an aerospace products or metals industry.

o Demonstrated proficiency in a CAD software system, preferably CATIA.

o Proficient in project management tools, such as Microsoft Project, Excel, and Power Point. o Comprehensive understanding of Lean, 6 Sigma and Value Analysis (VA) Engineering, including design for manufacturability.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk or sit.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the outlined experience level, education, training, minimum years of experience, product or industry knowledge plus any certifications to be considered.

  • BS degree in Engineering, preferably in a mechanical, aerospace, industrial or systems field.
  • Working knowledge of aerospace manufacturing is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills oral and written, able to document and present project status to customers and management.
Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Safety glasses, safety shoes and other designated personal protective equipment as required for the position.

  • Working conditions are: 80% office and 20% manufacturing environment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate and occasionally loud.
  • Hearing protection is required in designated areas.
  • Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.
  • Fully enclosed shoes of solid, leather construction with a steel or composite toe cap (ANSI Z41 compliant) must be worn in all manufacturing areas.
