This position will be focusing primarily on our Reserve Power applications, which include telecommunications, IT, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), utilities and switchgear, security, emergency lighting and general electronics. Some of the reserve power brands include PowerSafe,DataSafe, and Genesis. Our extensive product range serves a variety of reserve power applications and consistently delivers the most effective, powerful and reliable batteries available.
DEPARTMENT: Global Technology and Engineering, reporting to the Materials Development Manager.
SUMMARY: The Plastic Processing and Development Engineer provides global technical support internally as well as working with EnerSys plastics suppliers as required to ensure quality and procedural standards are met and maintained. The Engineer is expected to provide guidance on innovations linked to processing of established and new materials, tooling, and design related aspects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Functional Technical Support –
Assist internal departments (mainly Engineering, Procurement, and Quality) as well as EnerSys plastics suppliers with technical support pertaining to, but not limited to part design, tooling support (transfers, maintenance, repairs, etc.), production processing, joining of plastics, quality control, failure analysis, and cost savings (tooling and cavitation). This will require learning EnerSys’ tooling, plastic parts, and close interaction with associated suppliers covering a broad range of battery and electronic products. Evaluation of new injection molding suppliers, as needed.
Product Development –
Lead and/or assist engineering and other business units with key development projects related to new tooling, design, and production of plastic parts or modifications of existing parts. Apply working knowledge of plastic material processing to provide support to cross functional teams across multiple product lines as part of EnerSys New Product Introductions and existing product adaptations. Support the electrochemistry group, design engineers and the supply chain with respect to material selection, molding techniques and other project specific innovations.
Advanced Development Activities –
Challenge current preconceptions, drive innovation via the use of novel materials and processing techniques to achieve cost reduction, lightweighting, efficiency improvements and others.
Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Materials Science/Engineering or other engineering, science, math or similar technical discipline.
Five years of experience working with plastics injection molding processing, part design and tooling.
Experience of plastics joining technologies, metal to plastic replacement, additive manufacturing and/or overmolding is an advantage.
Knowledge and understanding of processability for a broad range of plastics, particularly for battery systems.
Knowledge of battery systems, such as Electric Vehicle battery systems built around lithium-ion technology, particularly regarding pack design, assembly, and processing of materials in these systems, is highly sought
Able to communicate effectively with co-workers, management, and executives.
Uses quantitative and qualitative data to identify and resolve issues / failure analysis.
Must have an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs, especially Excel. Experience of using CAD packages, such as Solidworks, will be beneficial but not mandatory.
The candidate should be adaptable, innovative, forward thinking with strong interpersonal skills
Up to 20% of time may be allocated to travel to EnerSys facilities and supplier sites to facilitate or coordinate solutions to problems related to the application of our products. International travel may be required.
