Validation Engineer, Battery
Battery Validation and Compliance Manager

The Validation Engineer is responsible for validation of high voltage battery cells and systems for applications such as HEV, PHEV, and EV. This individual will create DVP&Rs for battery programs in conjunction with the program team and the customer, and will manage and execute the validation plan using external test labs and internal resources. The individual will possess a good working knowledge of testing rechargeable lithium-ion battery cells, systems, and components, and will demonstrate a strong working knowledge of battery standards and testing methods found in documents published by USABC, SAE, IEC, UL, and others. Candidate will be capable of working cross functionally with professionals and technicians both within XALT Energy and with outside test labs. The position will also actively and constructively participate on improvement teams and in problem solving. An engineering degree is required with 5+ years of validation experience, automotive preferred.
Lead the design validation effort of EV, HEV, PHEV and other battery cells, packs, and subassemblies.
Own, create, and maintain the DVP&R with input from the Design team and the customer.
Assist with the development and documentation of the compliance matrix and safety procedures for testing of batteries.
Work with customers and engineering to achieve signature approvals of test plans.
Create, document, and maintain validation testing procedures and test reports.
Manage and perform validation testing at outside labs:
quotations, scheduling battery tests as well as battery shipment to and from test lab, witness of tests and test reports.
Provide technical assistance to the Engineering Design team during autopsy of batteries following validation tests.
Train and mentor other engineers and technicians.
Operate battery test equipment, interpret results, troubleshoot tests, resolve testing discrepancies, and prepare reports as needed.
Create and input test scripts for computer-controlled automation of tests as needed.
Operate within the requirements of ISO 17025 accreditation.
Support other departments and functions as needed.
B.S. degree in Engineering, required, electrical preferred.
5+ years in battery validation, automotive preferred.
In depth knowledge of and experience with testing EV, HEV, PHEV and other batteries, including the programming of pack test system, familiarity with Controller Area Network (CAN) communication interface and proficient use of CANoe/CANalyzer.
Strong work ethic, self-directed, highly accountable, and able to take ownership of validation activities.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve test issues.
Effective technical document writing capability.
Strong schematic and engineering document reading comprehension.
Proficient in the application and use of electrical and electronic lab test equipment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products:
Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.
Demonstrates strong teamwork skills.
Able to work in a clean room & low humidity environment as needed.
Ability to lift 50lbs.
Authorized to work in the U.S on a regular, full -time, permanent basis.
Experience testing electronic modules for use in automotive or heavy-duty environments.
Proficient in the application and use of electrical and electronic lab test equipment such as Oscilloscopes, Power Analyzers, Differential Voltage probes, Current Transformers, meters, thermocouples, etc.
Background with building manual and automated test fixtures.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve test issues.
Hands on experience performing product compliance testing.
Familiarity with Controller Area Network (CAN) communication interface and use of CANoe/CANalyzer.
Excellent communication and presentation skills; Ability to organize and summarize data and plans in presentable formats: Excel, Word, Power Point, Visio, and others.
