Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Research Engineer – Annealing/Pickling at our Research and Innovation Center in Middletown, Ohio. The Research Engineer – Annealing/Pickling will act in support of hot band and intermediate annealing and pickling of carbon, stainless and/or electrical steel products, particularly with respect to designing and implementing practices optimized for various development grades, including 3rd Gen AHSS’s. This position would look for opportunities to design, evaluate and implement new process-related technologies as well as work to gain general operational and cost efficiencies at various steel pickling and heat treating facilities.
Serve as one of the company’s experts for technologies and practices related to annealing and pickling of flat rolled steels.
Support continuous annealing and pickling operations throughout the company, with a focus on the facilities in NW Indiana area.
Advise and assist with finding and communicating best practices or changes for improvements related to annealing/pickling productivity, quality, yield, and similar items which impact the company’s bottom line.
Advise and assist with assessing both proven and developmental technologies for possible application within the company’s annealing/pickling facilities.
Assist, as needed, with trials related to new product development or products which are new for a particular annealing/pickling operation.
Work with, or at, the Research facility located in Middletown, Ohio, as needed, to analyze samples with various analytical equipment and/or to process steel using small-scale industrial equipment.
Other duties as assigned.
An advanced degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering or relevant experience is required.
Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
Experience and a thorough understanding of the technical, operational, and maintenance aspects of annealing and pickling is required.
Experience in annealing/pickling of flat rolled steel grades is preferred.
Experience and/or a technical understanding of key Research laboratory equipment and processes used to conduct trials aimed to investigate metallurgical interactions of steel grades to process conditions is required.
The ability to work independently to problem solve complex industrial issues is required.
The ability to document and bring work to a conclusion.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Solid computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office products. Programming skills and database management knowledge is preferred.
Knowledge of process modeling, process control techniques, and statistical data analysis is preferred.
Some travel may be required to support Cliffs manufacturing plants.
