Position: Project Superintendent – Asphalt Paving

Reports To: Division Manager

FLSA Status: Full Time

Position Summary:

Duties ofthis position include but are not limited to ensuring high quality work on allprojects, communicating goals and directions effectively to the crew, andpaving superintendents. Pro-actively identify problem areas on jobs, overcomeobstacles, and provide quality control. This position is also responsible fordaily interactions with any subcontractors, inspectors, owners/GC’s, etc. Itgoes without saying the Superintendent must understand budgets, change orders,cost codes, purchase orders, and must have a full understanding of overallproject design.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a field general that motivates andenforces a strong safety culture on the project.
  • Discusses and implements bestpractices that drive site safety daily
  • Manages and maintains thorough knowledge ofdocuments and schedule of activities
  • Aggressively focuses on delivering the highestlevel of quality on all projects
  • Monitors construction activities, includingsubcontractor performance for adherence to project documents and maintainsQuality Control cost reports, change-order requests, monthly billing input,punch lists and any other standard operating procedure reports
  • Proactively identifies potential problem areasearly in the process and develops strategies to overcome obstacles
  • Ensures paving superintendents and their crewshave a clear understanding of their duties and responsibilities, provideaccurate information and direction as well as the necessary tools, materialsand equipment to perform their jobs
  • Maintains daily paperwork, such as dailyreports, field/inspection reports, purchase orders, contracts, billing reports,receipts, delivery tickets and correspondence

General Responsibilities:

  • Develops, monitors, and enforces compliance withsite-specific safety manual and enforces a clean and safe jobsite includingdocumentation, and is OSHA compliant
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of safetyviolations and takes corrective action where necessary
  • Ensures that proper safety equipment isavailable and used by all field personnel
  • Actively participates in project appropriatepre-planning meetings with subcontractors to familiarize all subcontractorswith the project schedules, construction methods, company procedures andpolicies and quality standards
  • Provides quality control/assurance support onself-performance work and subcontractors work
  • Reviews, expedites and monitors materialdeliveries in accordance with the project schedule. Reviews all designrevisions for added cost and schedule impact.
  • Maintains up-to-date progress information,including labor and material cost data
  • Ensures accurate and updated documents aremaintained on-site
  • Participates with Project Manager in weekly andmonthly reviews; Immediately reports issues and delays
  • Preplans all schedule activities, manpower andmaterial requirements for the project, and maintains communication with theproject team
  • Creates three-week, look-ahead schedules for allwork that reflects the project schedule to make sure all required resources areavailable and communicate to the team
  • Ensures punch list is completed per exitstrategy requirements, and reports final numbers
  • Controls and coordinates personnel orientation,safety training and program administration, labor relations and site security
  • Communicates and works proactively to addressall subcontractor issues
  • Resolves project problems, disputes and openissues on a daily basis
  • Develops and maintains relationships withowners, owner’s on-site rep, architect, engineer, subcontractors and vendors
  • Identifies personality differences and work hardto communicate and achieve common goals, spends time daily developing andmentoring others
  • Any other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in heavy civil construction.Specific to CDOT, FAA, Municipal,and Mainline Paving Projects
  • Thorough understanding of what it means to be the Superintendent ofseveral crews; oversee, direct, and mentor the teams.
  • Experience working on jobs ranging from $50K to$5M.
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Ability to be self-motivating, dependable, a teamplayer, and perform duties with little supervision.
  • Strong computer skills required. Experiencenavigating tablets for time and equipment entry and modification, as well askey performance indicator reporting.
  • Must have valid Driver's License
  • Bi-lingual is a plus but not required
  • Excellent time management skills; good planningskills; able to multi-task
  • Able to work in outdoor setting under varyingweather conditions

  • Standing- 8 to 10 hours daily

  • RepetitiveMovement (shoveling/sweeping) – 8 to 10 hours daily
  • Lifting(weights up to 50 lbs.) - Occasionally
  • Liftand Carry (50/60 lbs. for 20 feet) - Occasionally
  • Push /Pull – 8 to 10 hours - Occasionally
