The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.
The Lead Engineer be responsible to identify faults on the distribution system that are causing customer issues on their feeder, as well as voltage sags seen by customers. Required focus on reliability to reduce outages by identifying root causes of the faults, before they cascade to an actual outage. Additional duties would be to provide the final answer to the customer plus provide an understanding of outage prevention and momentary events on the distribution system. The Lead engineer would be expected to take charge of the customer’s power quality issue. They would be required to meet with customer to understand what the real issue is and may or may not be required to set and meter to record activities. If a meter is set they are responsible for downloading the data and analyzing the problem.
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems at a corporate or industry level in their area of expertise.
Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where little to no standardization exists; handles unique situations which require searching for solutions which may have corporate or industry impact.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to a corporate or industry level in their field of expertise.
Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating high-impact complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the company's competitive position.
Possesses expert knowledge of the organization; demonstrates a mastery of existing and emerging organizational technologies, issues, processes and practices.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.
Provides technical leadership and direction on a corporate or industry level in their field of expertise.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Registration as a Professional Engineer
A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Eight (8) years related work experience
Valid driver's license
Skilled in engineering theories and principles
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
Good verbal/written communication skills
Experience in dealing with customers – industrial (transmission & Distribution), commercial and residential
Experience in working on energized low voltage equipment
Ability to work with generation plants, nuclear, fossil, solar, hydro
Experience with EMF, RFI, NEV (Stray & contact voltage)
Analytical skills – trouble shooting, data analysis
Ability to work independently without supervision
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Experience utilizing lab test equipment such as surge generator, arbitrary and waveform generators, scopes, etc.
Experience troubleshooting complex power quality concerns including but not limited to voltage and flicker on utility and customer side
Experience working with power quality tools and equipment including infrared cameras, EMF meters and voltage recorders
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
Desired Work experience – 10 Years
Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
