LTK ENGINEERING SERVICES, one of the nation's most respected consultants to the railroad and rail transit industries, currently has an immediate opening for the position listed below.
Rail Vehicle Mechanical Structural Engineer
A BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and 10-20 years of rail vehicle experience. Candidates possessing structural engineering experience related to vehicle structural design or aerospace structures will be considered. The ideal candidate must possess broad-based knowledge of vehicle structural design and crashworthiness (Stress Analysis, Dynamics; Vibration Control, Fatigue Design, Forensic Analysis, and Materials). Qualifications desired include: demonstrated experience working with use of both linear and non-linear Finite Element (ANSYS, LSDYNA, Abaqus or equivalent); materials including composites and composite design; knowledge of general manufacturing processes including machining, welding, and sheet metal work; field testing and equipment installation in a vehicle structures or industrial environment; and experience designing mechanical joints. Rail experience is highly desirable. The candidate must demonstrate a high work ethic; be willing to work independently or under limited instruction from senior staff or clients; be able to interact well with customer staff in a field environment; and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills including team management, project management, multitasking, and meeting deadlines. PE registration is desirable but not required. Relevant professional experience will be considered as a substitute for academic degree requirements. Both domestic and foreign travel may be required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Review and/or generate linear and non-linear FEA results.
Review mechanical/structural/welding related design submittals and prepare detailed, actionable comments of findings; participate in formal design review meetings and technical working sessions.
Inspect and review prototype and first article equipment and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings and participate in quality assurance and manufacturing audits.
Lead failure investigation and root causes analysis studies; prepare client ready reports on findings
Witness mechanical equipment and/or structural components undergoing qualification testing, including shock and vibration, and environmental testing.
Develop technical specifications for structural systems including crashworthiness requirements.
Provide project management, task oversight, and engineering support as required.
Act as a mentor to junior staff and develop training material.
