A Day in the Life of

You will help change the landscape of the smallsat industry, be an integral and unique part of a close knit team of individuals operating in a high energy environment, changing the fundamental fabric of how humanity puts things into space. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for designing a variety of system critical hardware to bring projects and sub-systems from concept to reality. This is a full-time position located at our test facility at Spaceport America, near Truth or Consequences, NM with periodic travel to our headquarters in Long Beach, CA.

Your Mission

  • Bring projects and sub-systems from concept to reality - rapidly and effectively
  • Leverage your existing multidisciplinary knowledge and quickly self teach new skill sets to competently navigate and manage projects that intertwine with electronic control systems and manufacturing
  • Anticipate needs, identify problems, think creatively, and methodically produce above average solutions to unique mechanical challenges
  • Use CAD, FEA, programming environments, and spreadsheets to design a variety of system critical hardware
  • Manage the design of hardware, the acquisition of required materials, and the instruction of assembly and testing in a fast paced environment where the implementation of other systems are dependent on the completion of your tasks
  • Effectively convey ideas and communicate technical topics with engineering, build staff, and operations. Run self-directed design reviews and participate in reviews of parallel systems
  • Anticipate needs, identify problems, think creatively, and rapidly produce reliable and cost-effective solutions to meet the ever growing and changing needs of SpinLaunch's research and development efforts
Ongoing projects that you will be involved with directly or indirectly include: Composite Structures, Propulsion Systems, Structural Design, Drive and Bearing Systems, Control and Automation Hardware.

You Have

  • As part of New Mexico's Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP), you must meet the following requirements:
  • Have been a resident of the state of New Mexico for at least 1 year at any time prior to employment
  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or in "STEM" related majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • Minimum 1+ years of extra-curricular collegiate, internship, or industry experience. Examples include:
  • multiple semesters on a competitive collegiate team (e.g. FSAE, Design Build Fly, etc.) with increasing personal design/analysis/build/test responsibility
  • multiple summer and/or semester internship experiences in design and development roles in challenging technical industries
  • full-time engineering employment in aerospace, technology, transportation, or other similar industries
  • Proficiency in CAD: SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, NX, etc. is required
  • Analysis background (Finite Element, ANSYS, etc.) as well as programming experience (MATLAB or similar) is required
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills is a must
  • Willing to travel approx. ~10% to visit headquarters in Long Beach, CA as well as vendors and consultants, as applicable
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends (or substitutes shifts) when specific highly-critical manufacturing events dictate as needed
It would be Epic if you had

  • 3+ years professional design/development experience in the aerospace/ high tech industries and/or advanced degree(s) in engineering or technology
  • Heavy hands-on experience building systems (e.g. competitive collegiate project teams, flight vehicles, etc.)
  • Ability to perform trade studies from "first principles" and basic engineering fundamentals to drive a design from inception forward
  • Experience with mechanisms and mechanical systems
  • Solid understanding and experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ASMY Y14.5, manufacturing technologies & methods, and experience working with in-house and outside vendors
  • Passion for space exploration and creating state-of-the-art systems
