JM Family is currently hiring a Chief (Marine) Engineer. This role maintains, operates and oversees all equipment on all company vessels as well as acting as a manager of full service “Preventative Maintenance” program and associated parts inventory on assigned vessel.
How You'd Spend Your Day:
Communicating with Captain/OIC on a daily basis to plan activities, and discuss status of equipment, repairs and projects.
Establishing and following a preventative maintenance schedule for vessel assigned.
Assisting in development of long-term (three to five years) repair, refurbishment and maintenance schedule.
Maintaining engine room and related spaces in “tour ready” condition.
Maintaining a daily checklist of equipment for assigned vessel in order for Captain and crew to maintain proper checks on equipment in the absence of the Engineer.
Maintaining GLVMS logs, Waste Oil and Fueling logs.
Maintaining equipment tech manuals, diagrams and drawings in an appropriate and organized manner updating as necessary.
Preparing a list of parts and supplies required for all extended cruises for assigned vessel, and in a timely manner for yearly budget considerations.
Keeping a record of all equipment which is under warranty and submitting all apparent problems for claim while equipment is still under warranty.
Sourcing different suppliers to get the best price for parts/supplies and providing estimates prior to purchase in compliance with JMFE and department practices.
Recognizing alarms and abnormal conditions and immediately responding in an appropriate manner and reporting to Capt/OIC (including emergencies and security measures). Understanding and practicing all safety policies and procedures.
Be available to conduct boat checks when scheduled and provide emergency response when required. Be available during off duty times to answer calls from, and, if needed, respond to, other crew doing boat checks regarding engineering issues.
Maintaining budgetary practices, planning and compliance, as outlined by the department as it relates to engineering.
Assisting outside contractors when possible to expedite their jobs in an efficient and timely manner.
Must become familiar with all area shipyards, yard facilities and yard management.
Maintaining a complete index of all suppliers and vendor phone numbers including emergency and weekend numbers where applicable.
Must be willing and able to attend any schooling, either in the US or overseas, as requested by Marine Department management.
Must be available to assist on new construction or projects assigned by Marine Department leadership.
Submitting expense reports on a timely basis.
Maintaining all dockside equipment at assigned docks.
Be available to support other job functions on any company vessel when necessary.
Assisting with troubleshooting and/or maintenance projects on all company vessels when needed regardless of vessel assignment.
Providing training for mates and officers on engineering equipment so they are familiar enough to operate the equipment as per their job description.
Participating in all safety or security drills, both announced and unannounced.
Must demonstrate leadership by assisting Captain and Officers maintain a positive, productive work environment.
Submitting annual goals and career goals to Captain.
Coordinating engineer boat coverage for all boats as it relates to time off and vacations.
Reports to the Captain or OIC, and manages an assistant when assigned.
Works in either a lead role or support role in tandem with another engineer on a two-year rotational basis for our larger vessels.
Team Concept: Must be able to work well with all crew members and function positively in a team environment for extended periods of time.
Departmental Policies: Must adhere to all Marine Department Policies including any SOP’s for assigned vessel.

Must hold and maintain a US Coast Guard license (minimum of DDE unlimited 500 ton), a valid Passport, driver’s license, TWIC and SRVS numbers and any other certificates or documents as required by the USCG.
Five years experience as Chief Engineer on board a vessel of 100+ feet or two years as apprentice onboard company vessels.
Ability to make safe, logical decisions with the persistence to follow through on all assignments.
Ability to communicate and delegate effectively to get repairs and projects done in a timely manner without supervision.
Ability to travel extensively on short notice.
