What You Will Do
T he Weapon Systems Engineering (W) Division provides systems engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of our nation’s nuclear stockpile for the entire life cycle. W Division is responsible for leadership of activities in stockpile assessment, certification, and life extension projects.
The Production Liaison Group (W-8) is responsible for the definition and oversight of weapon production activities at the production agencies (PAs). W‑8 has duty stations onsite at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and offsite at Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), the Pantex Plant (Tri-Lab Project Office), and the Y‑12 National Security Complex. W-8 partners with all legacy programs, Life Extension Programs (LEPs), and alteration programs (Alts). W-8’s portfolio also provides a platform to partner with both internal and external stakeholders. It is a very fast-passed and dynamic group. This position is located onsite at LANL.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Primary responsibilities will be in support of the B61, W76, W78, and W88 weapons component production at the various Production Agencies. Activities may include assisting with hardware provisioning for local, joint, flight and hydro tests, and system engineering support for Product definition.
Provide the technical interface between the various PA’s and the LANL Design Agency systems engineering and physics communities.
Provide guidance to assist with production activities (manufacture and assembly) for weapon components and systems.
Work directly with the PA to resolve issues relating to nuclear weapon production and integrity.
Provide engineering expertise and resolve technical and programmatic issues associated with weapons systems as deemed appropriate by the W-8 Group Leader.
Interface with colleagues at other laboratories and their contractors and the NNSA.
Participate in PA Site Reviews and Parts Status meetings.
Coordinate and approve PA procedure/process changes.
Participate as required in the Qualification of production activities, Product Realization Teams (PRT) and issuance of Engineering Authorizations (EAs).
Represent LANL at numerous programmatic meetings and assist in any special projects required by LANL management.
Provide detailed knowledge, information, and experience related to weapon component manufacturing methods to the Production Agency.
Lead PRTs during the concurrent engineering/process development, process prove-in, engineering evaluation, qualification and production phases.
Represent LANL at numerous programmatic meetings as the lead and participate in any special projects required by LANL management.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of engineering principles to provide solutions in one or more of the following disciplines; material science, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering. Advanced ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications. Advanced functional knowledge of the B61, W76, W78, and the W88 Weapon Systems in regards to production and operation. Advanced experience with nuclear weapons production and production certification of special nuclear materials and components applicable to the various Los Alamos designed Weapon Systems. Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
Weapons Complex Experience
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of National Security Enterprise (NSE) personnel including internal and external customers to provide solutions to complex problems. Advanced experience leading PRTs during the concurrent engineering/process development, process prove-in, engineering evaluation, qualification and production phases. Advanced experience mentoring less experienced personnel, team with other personnel across the NSE, and present work objectives and results at all levels to internal and external management and customers.
Advanced development and implementation of innovative process improvements that correct systemic production issues. Demonstrated and proven record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.
Communication and Teamwork
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
An advanced degree in science or engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university required.
Experience with the engineering authorization system, document management systems (e.g., PDM Link) and applications to stockpile maintenance.
Ability to interpret specifications and mechanical drawings including GD&T.
Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more NSE Production Agencies.
Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.
Active Q clearance.
