The Entry-Level Engineer or Scientist will be expected to provide compliance and/or engineering/design support for projects being conducted for private and municipal solid waste clients. The individual may be required to conduct assignments in both field and office settings. Engineer candidates will be expected to provide engineering support to our existing solid waste practice consisting of landfill and landfill gas design, sustainable materials management, construction, and monitoring, for private and municipal clients. This position includes opportunities for collection center siting/permitting and design, transfer station and materials recovery facility siting/permitting and design (all phases, including construction plans, specifications and construction documents), engineering analysis, feasibility studies, report writing, as well as construction oversight. Scientist candidates will have a focus on environmental compliance at landfills, primarily dealing with air permit requirements. This will include data management, review, and analysis, report preparation, correspondence with regulatory authorities, emissions calculations, and permitting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Record data during field work, which could include, but not limited to: soil characteristics, lithology, groundwater or surface water data, photographs, or summaries of visual observations through photograph and written field logs in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Prepare environmental assessment/ monitoring reports, including tabulated data, charts, graphs, sketches and/or figures.
Collect samples from hazardous and non-hazardous sites, including: soil, air, surface water, groundwater, and landfill gas.
Oversee drilling activities involving, monitoring and well installation, borehole logging, well development, and sampling.
Conduct and document construction quality assurance observations to ensure compliance with construction documents.
Complete quality control reviews on all work product (reports, design plans, design calculations, data, etc.) prior to submission.
Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and clients as directed.
Coordinate with CAD drafters for design plans/figures or uses AutoCAD for basic design plans/ figures.
Prepare reports such as: Phase I, environmental site assessment, emission, groundwater, and compliance reporting.
Prepare permit applications and/or regulatory agency submittals and responses with supporting documentation as requested.
Prepare calculations for reports and in support of design documents as requested.
Assist in training Environmental Field Technicians and Technical Associates.
Prepare short form site specific health and safety plans as requested.
Participate in health and safety training as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Intermediate skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
High attention to detail.
Basic health and safety knowledge.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Basic AutoCAD knowledge is preferable.
Ability to obtain 40 hour HAZWOPER within 1 month of employment.
Basic problem solving skills.
Ability to read directions for field testing equipment.
Understanding of scientific concepts including: physics, statistics, chemistry, mathematics, and geosciences.
Ability to use basic hand tools such as hammer, screw driver, etc.
Ability to travel and be in the field as directed by supervisor or project manager.
Bachelors of Science degree in Civil, Environmental or Geotechnical Engineering or Environmental Science or Geology required.
Minimum of 3 months of relevant environmental and/or engineering internship, work and/or research experience.
For candidates with an Engineering or Geology degree, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) preferred.
Valid Driver’s License with a driving record in good standing required.
