We are seeking an R&D Engineer I to join the Research & Development team at the Headquarters office in Moon Township, PA.
The R&D Engineer primarily supports new process/product development projects. Knowledge of chemistry and engineering principles is required in both lab and plant projects. Experience with activated carbon is preferred, as well as experience in industrial/manufacturing environments. The position is “hands-on”, involving tasks such as high-temperature equipment operation, lab analyses and preparation of solids and solutions, physical handling/testing of granular and powdered materials in bulk quantities of 50 lbs or less, and occasional shift coverage at a manufacturing plant. Also required is flexibility, creativity, and collaboration in teams of personnel with various backgrounds and educations, and ability to simultaneously work on projects at various stages of completion, while dealing with frequent changes in priorities in a fast-pace R&D environment. While most work involves existing projects, he/she has occasional lead technical roles for lab-scale projects (1-4 weeks duration), Additionally, he/she is expected to provide on-site technical support for evaluating new processes at full scale production facilities. 10-20% travel, and off-shift work for duration of 2-4 days, is expected for such activities. For all tasks, full and timely reporting of data is a must, including ability to organize/analyze data in spreadsheets. He/she is also expected to regularly provide conclusions/recommendations based on the data and may formally present results as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities (not limited to)
Field assistance for projects in manufacturing that exceed the scope of standard process engineering work
Leads small lab-scale development projects
Operates and understands lab-scale thermal equipment. Conducts and understands the basic principles of standard chemical and physical testing of solids and liquids
Proficient in spreadsheet data analysis. Accurate and thorough documentation of experimental procedures and data in notebook and electronic form. Occasional formal reporting/presentation of results
A Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) Chemical Engineering or equivalent from a four-year college or university is required
Zero-Two years of industrial and laboratory experience is required.
Zero-Two years of data analysis (including statistics) and maintaining equipment experience is preferred.
