Do you have a passion for microbes and want to help in the development of microbial solutions for a more sustainable world? Do you have experience in analytical chemistry, including sample analysis and method development? If so, you could be our next colleague in Microbe Research. As an Research Associate, you will work on a cross-disciplinary a team of experts in strain engineering, fermentation, data science, and biochemistry. You will draw on expertise in analytical chemistry to implement, and execute methods for evaluating the performance and phenotype of wild-type and genetically modified microbes.

In Microbe Research, California we use classical industrial microorganisms and develop new ones to bring Biological Solutions to our customers' toughest problems in biofuels, agriculture, food & beverage, and beyond. We are connected to other global Microbe Research sites in Berlin, Research Triangle Park, NC, and Copenhagen. This position will join the Microbe Analytics & Automation team, where we deploy technologies for building, testing & understanding the performance and health of our microbes at high, medium, and low throughputs.
In this role you’ll make an impact by:
Implementing, executing, and developing analytical chemistry methods that let us identify promising new microbes with desirable phenotypes, and characterizing lead microbes in additional detail
Maintaining and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation including HPLC/UPLC, GC, mass spectrometers and plate readers.
Utilizing and writing methods and scripts for automated capture, processing, and analysis of analytical data
Working within an agile team to design and conduct scientific experiments to support multiple research projects
Using laboratory data information systems such as Riffyn or Benchling to capture and track lab processes and experimental data
Interpreting experimental results and sharing them with the local and global Novozymes community
Ensuring timely delivery of results to internal or external customers
To succeed in this position, you must have:
Proficiency with a variety of analytical chemistry instrumentation for measuring microbe properties and metabolites: HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, UV-VIS, fluorescence
Experience with successful analytical chemistry method development, validation, and implementation
Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting analytical chemistry instrumentation
Working technical knowledge of analytical and organic chemistry in a life science or biotechnology context. Previous experience studying microbiomes, plant-microbe interactions, or protein / enzyme characterization is especially desirable.
Demonstrated proficiency utilizing existing scripts and processes (Python, Jupyter notebooks, R, JMP or other) for data capture, processing, and analysis of large datasets with statistical mindset
A detail-oriented and self-driven attitude to conduct hands-on experiments in the laboratory as part of a collaborative team.
A B.S. degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related field with 0-3 years’ experience outside academia.
Candidates with the following experience are especially preferred:
Previous work with analytical methods as part of high-throughput synthetic biology workflows, including operation of liquid handlers such as Beckman Biomek, Hamilton, Tecan, and Echo acoustic pipettor systems.
Familiarity & practical work with microbiology and molecular biology methods used to engineer bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi, such as aseptic technique, cloning & transformation techniques, and fermentation processes.
Experience with Agilent HPLC and GC instruments, and with Chemstation software
Successful examples of writing your own scripts for data capture, processing & analysis (Python, R or other language).
Previous use of data management software such as Tableau, Benchling, Riffyn or related
