The Laboratory Maintenance Engineer I is responsible for managing all instruments used in the laboratory. This person will ensure proper instrumentation maintenance, participate in selecting new instrumentation, help with the development of new processes for instrumentation, and have overall responsibility to ensure instrumentation's optimal operation. This position will report to the supervisor of Automation Engineer and indirectly to the Director of Laboratory Development.
Ensure proper operation of laboratory instrumentation
Troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment and automation.
Perform regularly scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) of laboratory equipment and automation.
Carefully document observations made and work performed during repairs and PM's.
Respond to critical equipment issues after hours when scheduled for on-call support.
Communicate with internal equipment users to troubleshoot and repair complex and/or intermittent problems.
Bachelor of Science Degree in an appropriate field (chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or other field related to laboratory instrumentation)
Experience in laboratory quality operations and/or in a CLIA/CAP/NYSDOH/FDA regulated environment.
Familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques preferred (i.e., PCR)
Excellent time management, scheduling, and organizational skills
Ability to work effectively under tight timelines and schedules
Ability to work independently and as a contributing team member
Ability to sense the importance or impact of issues and situations and take appropriate actions
Must be flexible, innovative, and self-motivated
Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Lifting Requirements - medium work or exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pound of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force consistently
Physical Requirements - stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, reaching, and repetitive motion. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions. Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions - exposure to fumes, dust, extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid, noise, vibration, mists or gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and radiant energy hazards.
